Default ITV 65 Today

A pretty important anniversary in UK TV history . On this day in 1955 the first commercial TV channel went on air. There had been quite a lot of opposition to commercial TV at the time, but it had become a reality .

Only available in the London area it was a huge success, it had a great novelty value, on screen announcers, American programmes, game shows and of course adverts! It provided popular entertainment for the masses, making it a breath of fresh air from the rather stuffy output of the BBC. The BBC viewing figures fell through the floor in areas where ITV was available.

It also gave a boost to the TV manufacturers, for which it was a bit of a boom time, they could sell all the sets they made. Also dealers would have been very busy supplying ITV converters for BBC only sets.

Just wondered if there are any forum members who are old enough to have been in the trade and if the have any stories they would like to share with us

Regards Alan.

Apparently the studio that was adopted to make the 'Double Your Money' gameshow originally was fitted with Hi Def Pye cameras capable of around 600 to 1100 lines, these had been experimentally used to make cheap movies using TV multicamera techniques. They were chucked out to pursue the BBC's persistence with the (even then) creaky old 405 line system. While Europe of course was adopting 625 lines...with the help of the BBC LOL

The same BBC thinking was used when the Top of The Pops show was moved to London, they were given a studio with colour cameras, but chucked them out and put monochromes back in.
