Loudspeakers for a Civic Radiogram.

I'm restoring a Civic radiogram, one of the loudspeakers is open circuit. It measure 9" x 6".

I cant find replacements anywhere, if I were to fit car speakers, would they be any good?

Can anyone suggest an alternative?

Nothing wrong with car speakers if you can find the right size. They are normally 4 ohm, but that shouldn't matter.

Check the open circuit driver carefully first though, as it may be repairable.

Michael: I think these will be 5 ohm types. Currently available from most car scrappers are 9" x 6" high power handling drive units (possibly with a co-axial tweeter) at 4 ohms. Alternatively, use a more commonly available 10" x 6" unit or as a worst case a 8" x 5". These are regularly on auction sites c.£8 to £10.00. Of course the UK company ELAC once made a highly regarded 9" x 6" 3 ohm unit.

I am fairly sure that I have a vintage 9x6, 3R speaker and can dig it out if of interest. Of course, it may well not match the other one ! One advantage of the car speaker approach would be the matching.

I really need matching ones, I'll probably go down the car speaker route, but what I'm concerned about is efficiency, ie how much sound would I get from a single ended ECL86 output stage?

That's a very relevant point. Modern car speakers need to be driven quite hard. An old 3ohm 10" x 6" unit will be far more sensitive, if only one can be sourced?

I've found car speakers to be pretty sensitive, though obviously there's some variation. I agree you should really fit replacements as a pair, though this may be less important in the case of a radiogram.

It seems to depend on the speaker power rating. Some car speakers are rated at up to 100 Watts R.M.S. or more, and they are generally, very inefficient because of the necessary thicker speech-coil wire necessitating a larger air gap. Single ended ECL86's (in class A) are capable of about 4 Watts I believe, so maybe a speaker of up to 10 Watts would be better.

I would prefer to fit them as a pair. I'd also prefer older speakers rather than car speakers.

I've got a pair of Elac 59RM/114 which I bought from Wilmslow Audio years ago, chassis measurements are 8.75" x 5.75" x 3" I'm pretty sure they are 8 ohm, would these be of use?

Auxiliary baffle (chunk of 10mm ply) and 6" or 8" (if room) ordinary round units?

These were very well regarded in their day as an excellent full range unit. They were used in the unusual PARALINE speaker system design.
