Seeking a Cornish Dealer from the past
Although I've asked previously I still haven't managed to locate this gentleman.
In 1978 I bought my HMV901 television from him and I would like to make contact to find where he had obtained the set. Back then he was located near the Jamaica Inn. I have added a photo of him and how his house looked back then. Today the house looks rather different and the current owners have no knowledge of the 1978 owner. https://goo.gl/maps/TSrdiW7L2SwuaLzA9 Does anyone remember him and know his name and current location? Thanks, Peter |

Re: Seeking a Cornish Dealer from the past
Great pics!
He looks c.50 in the photo from what I can see, so he could possibly be in his 90s now, I suppose. Might be worth asking on one of the local history sites. Or getting hold of a Kelly's directory of the time. Good luck, Nick. Last edited by Nickthedentist; 11th Feb 2021 at 11:20 am. |

Re: Seeking a Cornish Dealer from the past
You could try looking at the electoral registers.
https://www.bl.uk/collection-guides/...ral-registers# It's also possible the records office for the area concerned may hold a copy.

Thanks guys.
Not knowing his name is a big problem and yes, he may very well be dead now. Peter |

Re: Seeking a Cornish Dealer from the past
Census records should give you names for an address (1981?). Have you tried that route ?

Re: Seeking a Cornish Dealer from the past
Can't help but I remember the house on the old road, must have passed that a few times.
If he owned the place it's possibly on the Land Registry, depending when it changed hands. Lawrence. |

100 years. The 1921 census will be available next year 2021.

Re: Seeking a Cornish Dealer from the past
This may help you to find out who lived there in 1939. It's possible the man's parents lived there.
Use the "Find a house" option. https://www.findmypast.co.uk/1939reg...E&gclsrc=aw.ds

Re: Seeking a Cornish Dealer from the past
A bit OT but a good chunk of the 1911 census was released 2 years early, I remember waiting in anticipation as I was doing a lot of genealogy stuff back then.

An entry for Deep Hatches Farm and other properties nearby is on the governments Land Registry site, last time I used that service for property details it cost less than £5.

Re: Seeking a Cornish Dealer from the past
Thanks everyone for giving thought and suggestions to this. I tried phoning some nearby antique dealers and ended up with a very lengthy conversation with a guy in Bodmin but whilst he was giving me his life story my wife remembered that the man in my photo had said that the set had belonged to his father who had lived in north London but moved to Cornwall.
I did also try phoning the Jamaica Inn to see if any longstanding customers remember my guy but of course they have no contact with their customers currently. It might be long enough before I get any response there. Peter. Last edited by peter_scott; 11th Feb 2021 at 4:02 pm. |

We're already a month and a bit into 2021, though I'm not sure when in the year it is released.

Re: Seeking a Cornish Dealer from the past
Well, when there's an outbreak of normality, you can have a summer holiday doing some sleuthing, Peter.
With the frequency range of the receiver, it had to have been first sold in the London coverage area, so you seem to have solved how it wound up in Cornwall. I guess you still need to find that antique dealer's name to get his father's name and then search London records. David

Re: Seeking a Cornish Dealer from the past
We don't live far and I am on the we love Cornwall FB group so if its OK I will put a post on there, please let me know. A few weeks ago I found a 1930's 40's we think signed photo of Bing Crosby in original envelope all the way from LA addressed to a lady locally near Padstow, I put a post on and her granddaughter said she would love it.

Re: Seeking a Cornish Dealer from the past
I've found a lady called Emma Jane Nottle (1885 - 1930)
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Nottle-76 Who ran a "Tea/Grocery Shop in the far end Jamaica Cottages" https://launcestonthen.co.uk/index.p...hes/bolventor/ Could your mystery seller be one of her decedents, or perhaps descended from her neighbour, business competitor, and nemesis, Mrs Couch? (It's like a Midsomer Murders plot, there's a haunted church further along the road).

Re: Seeking a Cornish Dealer from the past
The village gets a mention in "Radio! Radio!"
In January 1986, 21 homes on the northern side of the village of Bolventor on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall were still without mains electricity and were still relying on running their own generators, and Bolventor is possibly the last village in Britain yet to be fully connected to the National Grid).
