Re: Philips G8 G22K522
Our friends are C545 and 546. They are 5n1 in my book, though you'll need to double check the values in your set. The balancing coil (L003) is next to them. Replacements can be tricky to find. The originals are 1500v peak. I see some NOS ones on ebay, but they are the original type and prone to failure. Otherwise two 2.5nF in parallel for each would do, but the best I can find immediately is in the RS range. They're rated at 1000v which might be a bit low. They also stock 10nF (pt 114-452), two of which could be used in series for each capacitor. I'd be guided by what others have done.

Re: Philips G8 G22K522
Here's a sad tale what can happen if those green capacitors fail:
https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...ad.php?t=47402 It almost happened to me too, the CRT survived but the arcing sound was horrible. I recommend that you do not power the TV up until these are replaced. |

Re: Philips G8 G22K522
Thank you for that read, I definitely wont turn it on until they’re replaced. I dont think i would’ve, but that thread will definitely make me think twice should I think about it, for one reason or another.
Thanks |

Re: Philips G8 G22K522
Hampus - that was my set. These line output stage tuning capacitors didn't seem to cause so much bother back in the old days other than going short circuit occasionally without the disastrous results that going open causes!
Good luck 1977!

Of course, caps usually fail short, but a dry joint on the leg (and Philips did like a dry joint!) would cause the same effect. I bet at the time, customers were incredulous that the failure of a 50p capacitor resulted in needing a new CRT & scancoils and I guess would normally write the set off. Cheers Nick |

Re: Philips G8 G22K522
To be fair I repaired countless G8's and never had these caps fail. It is a time problem. Decades of probably damp storage has seen them all off.
Just a few years ago I had one of those green type caps fail in a Philips 20T324 [320 chassis] It popped the line oscillator chip..Luckily I had a spare. John. |

Re: Philips G8 G22K522
Like HKS, we had loads of G8s in and I really can't remember replacing those capacitors - maybe once for a picture that was too large. However they did cause trouble on the Pye 713 series.
1977 - don't use WD40. Something like 3-in-1 is fine, though just a drop. You want it to seep down into the coil. I advised you to remove the fuse which you have done. This isolates the line output stage so these capacitors are out of circuit along with the LOPT and everything else. The 205v rail is easily measured at either of the fuses on the power supply panel. You won't do it any harm running it for a while without the line stage connected - don't worry. Glad you've found where to put the tripler - odd that it was removed. Take the top hat connector off the LOPT before you start running things up. Those caps look the business so let us know when they're fitted. |

Yes indeed, I've replaced a good few 20ax picture tubes with the neck punctured, that main smoother was a killer!, the scan coils would just come off in your hand with the electron gun still attached!, circuit protection has come a long way since. Greg.

Okay, I've got plenty of that so that'll be no problem.

Re: Philips G8 G22K522
Hi,
I was just wondering if there's anyway I could re-insulate the LOPT. I know it was said it'd be fine, but my room is starting to get damp in the colder weather, even though I have the heating on. I do have the TV in front of the radiator to keep moisture away as much as possible, as well as a dressing gown over the vents to keep moisture out as much as I can. Unfortunately no signs of any caps yet, although I've had 2 pairs sent to me, none have turned up yet, I'll give it a week and if they're a no show i'll look online to buy some Thanks |

Hi, I might have a pair of NOS 5n1 caps (yellow Philips types). Give me a couple of days to find them.

Re: Philips G8 G22K522
If Ed is sending you some caps I'm sure he'll have some transformer tape that you could use. It's not a problem, but it would look nicer and would keep the damp out..

Re: Philips G8 G22K522
Hi,
Linescan87 is very kindly sending me another pair as the first pair failed to arrive. Thank you for the offer though, Ed, I appreciate it. I think i'll get to ordering some transformer tape, I didn't even know it existed! My main issue was the damp, as I don't want the LOPT failing! That'd be a nightmare. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it |

Re: Philips G8 G22K522
I'm sure it would be possible to dry out the lopt using the DC current trick.

Re: Philips G8 G22K522
Oh? What's the DC current trick? I have the heating on, with the TV in front of it at the moment to dry out any moisture, and to try and prevent any more moisture from getting near the set, but the heating isn't on all of the time.
Thanks |
