Vista Video 8902 VHS VCR.
Hi all,
I've just bought the above vcr and I'm wondering what the equivalent JVC/Ferguson Videostar model numbers are please. I can then find a service manual for it with the part numbers etc. I've included some pictures of it to aid recognition as the user manual that comes with it has the wrong model number Many thanks, Rich. |

Re: Vista Video 8902 VHS vcr.
From someone who has only ever had two VCRs I'd say 3V22. Still got the timer module somewhere!

Re: Vista Video 8902 VHS vcr.
Oddly enough I'd say the booklet is right and the VCR is wrong! It cerainly looks like a 3V22 with two lever switches on the front and a six-button timer. This was also known as the Baird 8902, hence the confusion. The 3V22 has a solenoid pause control and the 3V00 (JVC HR3330) has a mechanical linkeage so it's easy to tell the difference. There are some differences between the two with reagrd to belts so it's worth finding out before ordering parts..

Looks like the JVC HR-3320 or 3330 (3V22, 3V00). I have the HR-3330TR which is identical to this except it features PAL/SECAM/NTSC 4.43 playback.

Re: Vista Video 8902 VHS vcr.
According to my Thorn Television Rentals models equivalent listings, the 8902 is the Ferguson 3V00 and JVC HR3300EK. 24 hour 8 day 1 prog timer. Wired remote pause. Audio dub.

Re: Vista Video 8902 VHS vcr.
Vista tv rentals had outlet in times furnishing shop in the 1960's, but vcr where not being made at this time. Only lasted for a few years before being taken over by radio rentals possible about 1970 just when RR was expanding buying up companies like vision hire, rentaset, and Fred Dawes. Vista offered same day service on rented set, even on Sundays. Hope they paid S/e enough.
As regards the vcr R R must have used the name for some reason on Ferguson units Derrick |

Re: Vista Video 8902 VHS vcr.
Hi all, thanks for the replies!
I've never heard of Vista before, that's one of the reasons I bought the vcr. I've only ever seen the Ferguson, DER, Baird, Multi-broadcast, Thorn badged versions. Great to know it's a 3V00/ HR-3300, thanks. I'll look online to see if I can find a service manual for it, I thought I had one in my collection but it turns out the manual is for a HR-3330E. It should arrive in a few days so I'll get open and take a good look at the belt arrangements and if it has a solenoid or mechanical pause. Thanks again for the info, I'll post a few more pics when it arrives. Rich. |

Re: Vista Video 8902 VHS vcr.
Just a small correction. The 3V00 is actually the equivalent to the HR-3330. The HR-3300's Ferguson equivalent is the model 3292 which has an additional output selector toggle switch between the record input and timer/on/off switches and a different clock/timer button/switch layout.

Re: Vista Video 8902 VHS vcr.
Ahhhh, marvellous!
Thanks for the correct JVC number. That means my service manual for the HR-3330E vcr is the correct one for this Vista model. Now I can try to find a belt kit for it as I've no idea where to get one from. Just waiting for it to be delivered at the mo. Cheers all, Rich |

Don't forget to order a couple of cassette lamps as well- It's guaranteed to need one and the machine won't work without it!! In case you're not aware, the tiny central lamp is used to activate the tape end sensors, so if the lamp blows, the machine won't allow you to do anything! Very good, solid machines that were eye wateringly expensive when they were new. Hope you enjoy servicing and using it! Cheers Nick |

Re: Vista Video 8902 VHS vcr.
Have you had a look inside it at the belts? There are two variations of the mechanism. One has a big square belt that runs a few things off the capstan motor and the other one has replaced it with an idler and a smaller belt.
Your machine looks the same as my 8922 except mine has a JVC badge stuck on it. Mine has the mechanism with the idler. I don't know if they all do though as I've heard people on here mention converting from one to the other with a kit. I've got a machine which has the big belt as well. I'll try and get a photo of the two so you can see the difference. If you do have the one with the idler but got a belt kit with the big belt, it's not too difficult to find a belt to fit where the small one goes. I don't think it would be easy to find a substitute for the big belt though if it was the other way round. |

Re: Vista Video 8902 VHS vcr.
Hi Nick,
I have a few new cassette lamps suitable for these models. Thanks for the advice though. I just hope it'll be a working machine as I've been after a working one for years. I have two other Ferguson piano key vcrs but they both have various faults and I'm getting fed up trying to get them working and they're now in the scrap pile. Fingers crossed this one will be ok. Thanks again, Rich. |

I said 8922 above, I meant 8902. There's a great series of articles on servicing these written by Mike Phelan in television magazine. It starts in September 81. I learnt a lot about how they work and what faults cause what symptoms from reading those and was eventually able to get mine working properly after setting up the head drum servo. They're great machines. Good luck with yours. |

These are the two versions of the mechanism as seen from the underside of the deck.

Re: Vista Video 8902 VHS vcr.
Finally I've got my hands on the vcr after a whole lot of farting about from Parcelforce.
Apart from a snapped square section belt, cracked pinch roller and stiff tension arm it seems ok. I'm not getting any picture output or sound, just a static screen, so I'm thinking the video head drum has had it (I have nos spare head drums). Also when it's turned from standby to video, the head is spinning, relay motor/belt and the supply reel is turning before I press any tape transport key. Is this normal? It's the same if no cassette is inserted too. Also, is there meant to be a rubber tyre on the supply spool? I'm not too familiar with this early model so any tips woud be appreciated. Thanks Rich. Re: Vista Video 8902 VHS vcr.
Hi Rich,
The head drum and supply reel turn very briefly when it is switched from standby to video. Is this what's happening or do they run continuously? The takeup spool has a tyre, the supply one does not. If the head drum has had it you should still get sound as this is from the separate audio head. How have you got it connected to the TV, is it via RF or the baseband audio and video outputs? |
