Default Traders still in existence

I was reading a closed thread about Bygone Radio Traders and it reminded me about J A Kelly’s in Wesley Street, Southport. Took the family over to Southport last Thursday and Kelly’s is still going. I first visited his shop 51 years ago! I asked for some resistors for a project and was surprised when he said he didn’t sell them but put me onto a wonderful shop/shed in Nelson Street which did but is long gone. However he did sell me some Sinclair amps and a little radio I still have.
Here is the man himself....

I still call in at J A Kelly's for bits and pieces as I only live about quarter of a mile away, the other shop you mentioned in Nelson St was D M Rogers, when the owner died his son took over and eventually moved to Shakespeare St Southport and ran a Radio/TV repairers, it's still there but I'm not sure if it's still trading, it was until a year or so ago.

Yes I know Kelly's well. Have used the shop as a source of button cells for years. He always seems to have the obscure ones.

The Nelson Street one is sadly missed I got masses of stuff from there back in the 1950's and 60's.

There used to be Sutcliffes in Wesley Street ( Radio Repair Shop ).
and Masons who sold electrical appliances and hardware ( plugs sockets house wiring stuff ). They were a source of cotton covered insulated copper wire and enamelled copper wire in a range of SWG gauges.

I think the son of the Nelson Street shop has a TV repair shop in Shakespeare Street these days.

Back in 1960, as a 15 year old, I used to cycle out from Bootle, via the Formby dual carriageway by-pass to Southport. Stopped outside RAF Woodvale for a snack, and watched the Chipmunk activity, then on to Kelly's. Just bought the odd bit of wire or component with my paper-round money, the on to Mattie & Tissot's sweet Shop on George St to spend more coppers.
Guess that prompted me to join the RAF 6 months later as a Boy Entrant trainee air wireless mechanic in Jan '61. Happy days.

Regards, David

I had a chat with Jack Kelley on Wesley Street only last week. I was after a new watch battery but he put me on to a jewellery shop a couple of doors down. I don't think he fancied working on my watch (a fairly expensive one) but he was still as helpful as ever.

D.M. Rogers in Nelson Street - now you're talking! It was my favourite haunt when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's. It was a ramshackle little building with a corrugated perspex roof you could probably just lift off! I remember seeing a Fane Colossus 18 inch speaker hung up in the window for the first time. At age 9 or 10, I'd never seen a speaker as big as that and was amazed. They also had all sorts of government surplus and ex-military gear. For instance, one time they had a gyroscope unit from a Blue Streak missile. I quite fancied that and wished I'd bought it now. The shop was owned by Jack Bigland (D.M. Rogers was his wive's maiden name - not a lot of people know that!). As John says, Dave Bigland still runs D.M. Rogers in Shakespeare street where he specialises mainly in TV repairs. Sadly, he no longer supplies components or surplus gear but that's not surprising really I suppose.
