Trouble Finding Replacement Capacitors for Vintage Washer
Hi guys,
Looking for some help finding replacements for these two capacitors in my Hoover Keymatic De Luxe 3223H from 1970. They are both capacitors for the drive motor but associated with different windings within the motor as one winding is for slow speed and the other is for fast. I am clueless with capacitors other than knowing that they are an essential component! They are both 9µF 430v capacitors made by TCC/Plessey but one is slightly larger and says “Continuous” whereas the other smaller one says “Intermittent”. I can’t seem to find a direct replacement and I don’t want to cause damage to the non-replaceable motor by fitting something that’s not 100% acceptable. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Links would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance, James |

Re: Trouble Finding Replacement Capacitors for Vintage Washer
The "continuous" capacitor will be called a Run capacitor in modern parlance,
and the "intermittent" one is called a Start capacitor. Modern ones tend to be universal and can fill either role. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/9uf-Capac...AAAMXQlgtS9Qax Dispose of the old ones appropriately, the contents is likely to be toxic.

Re: Trouble Finding Replacement Capacitors for Vintage Washer
There are several online suppliers and as an example 'espares' have a range of 9uf motor type capacitors but it might take a message to them to request full specifications. They don't appear to have a Hoover dedicated one though. Having said that, as long as the voltage and capacitance ratings and any other requirements match up, there should not be any problem with substitution in this case. Otherwise try searches for 'Hotpoint spares', 'white goods spares' or domestic appliance spares'. Also try substituting the word 'spares' for 'parts'.

Also I see the words Internal Resistor on both. Does that mean anything important?

Re: Trouble Finding Replacement Capacitors for Vintage Washer
Hi,
I did some shopping around and bought two “universal” 9µF capacitors that fulfil both start and run operations so I’m hoping they are suitable. The only difference is that the modern ones all seem to run at 450 volts rather than the 430 on the originals. Would that be a problem? Thanks for your help! |

Re: Trouble Finding Replacement Capacitors for Vintage Washer
No not a problem, it is the maximum AC voltage it is rated for.
