Digital Recorders Sony TCD 7 & 8 Philips DCC 170
I have recently been giving my Digital tape recorders a refurbishment 3 Sony TCD D7 & D8 and a Philips DCC 170.
The Philips unit was a belt turned to goo unfortunately, Philips decided to bury the belt under 2 PCBs and solder them in place, requiring a complete strip down. If you need to do this yourself there is a good video on YouTube by Dr DCC showing you all the stages. Here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7aj4Lnee9c&t=1229s Likewise with the Sony units there are videos showing the strip down and relubrication of the deck a long and fiddly job. There is very long video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIfgVWZOZbk&t=8555s The main problem with the Sony units are after the strip down the gear assembly has to be assembled in a particular order and the timing set or it will never work properly. I found all the videos I looked at were unclear about the timing so I did my own research. The TCD-D7 & 8 use basically the same mechanism as the earlier TCD D3 and I found a print of how-to time those, although the print was not that clear. For the benefit of other who want to tackle one of these I have attached the procedure for the TCD D3 along with some pictures to better show the timing marks for figures 1 and 2 which are hard to read. I have highlighted them in white. This procedure is done with the mechanism fully laced up. All the manuals are on HiFi Engine, to understand these decks read the technical theory listed under the TCD D3.
