Default Screwdriver Offer at Aldi 100 Piece £23

Just bought online the screwdriver set for £23 which looks good value and the quality is OK for the money it also comes with a sturdy stand for the workbench or wall mounting.
No connection other than as a customer.

That's amazing value. I realise that people are going to go on about the quality, but for most of us, for hobby use they'll do the job and ensure the correct driver is always at hand. As it happens, I won't be buying one because over the years I have collected enough drivers of all types, sizes and lengths to equip an army maintenance team. Otherwise I'd be the first in line.

Like Steve I have so many, bought, inherited and "found" screwdrivers that I won`t partake though it looks a reasonable offer.

Sort of "Alley of Aldi" rather than "Middle of Lidl".

As the proud? user of three workshops and a garage, only one of which has enough screwdrivers, I've ordered a set.....

I am just setting up my new workshop after a house move, time to cull those worn and damaged screwdrivers.
I have ordered a set of these.

I've had an identical set (in red) for over 2 years now.........

I also have the very annoying habit of, when losing one or two of the set, buying another whole set!

Mrs k_e isn't inmpressed.

When I cleared out my workshop before my move I counted 117 screwdrivers in various places. I had been collecting them since 1967 mind.

Thanks for the heads-up, looks like a nice addition to any workshop. Incidentaly, Mr. Carlson's (new) Lab seems to have been equipped with this set for a few months, so you're in good company!

Cheers

What is not clear from the description is that the screwdriver bits are (quite heavily) magnetised.
I am returning my set.

Yes, that’s odd. But nothing my Ferrograph demagnetiser can’t handle….

I think that's a feature rather than a bug. It means that any screws you unscrew stay on the end of the screwdriver rather than falling down inside the cabinet where you can't get at them. Also helps with installing screws in awkward places. Personally I find that advantageous.

I prefer my screwdrivers unmagnetised, its quite disconcerting to bring a screwdriver near a chassis and have it veering off to stick to it.
If I need a screw to stay on the driver when assembling in awkward places I use a blob of Blu-tack.

I am also a fan of non magnetic drivers mostly.
Screws that are placed in holes awaiting the screwdriver can jump onto a magnetic driver turning 90 degrees onto the side of the shaft.
If I need a magnetic driver I use a cordless style bit in a magnetic extension.

I use unmagnetized screwdrivers. When working with steel screws in awkward places I have a Magnetic Tool Holder on the wall, I just swipe the screwdriver a couple of times. This is usually enough to keep the screw in place. This makes screwdriver low level magnet, it does not let the screwdriver snap to chassis and seem to wear off after a day or so as I often have to swipe them. I do not service Tape Recorders or I may have to have a rethink.

John.

Why not place/position screws in holes using the magnetic screwdriver?

I mean, I do see that there are situations where a non-magnetic screwdriver is preferable, but for me, mostly a magnetic screwdriver doesn't create a problem when being magnetic is not needed, but offers lots of benefits when it is. I have Blutak and I have screwdriver add on screw grippers but neither are as easy to use as a magnetic driver. I totally accept that we're all different!

The advantage with the cordless style holder is that a non metallic packing piece can be placed in the holder to reduce the magnetism.
Steel in the surrounding area can occasionally pull the screw away from the hole and around the sice of the driver.

I find magnetised tools to be a curse, and feel that anybody who manufactures them should be condemned to spend eternity having to assemble a Syncho-Compur camera shutter with magnetised screwdrivers and tweezers.

There are/were screw-holding screwdrivers at least for slotted screws that were non-magnetic, they have blades in 2 wedge-shaped sections which thus get thicker when squeezed together by the tubular shaft of the screwdriver. Not only do such tools not pull other parts out of position, they also work on brass and stainless steel screws (magnetised screwdrivers of course don't help with those).
