Metal cabinet restoration: NAAFI MSQ
I’ve just picked up this NAAFI radio which has a metal cabinet, its steel and very heavy. There is some surface rust but not bad, I won’t be repainting this but want to stop the rust and stabilise the paint.
I was thinking of trying a rust converter and then a lacquer. I can test this on the bottom where it can’t be seen to make sure it doesn’t damage the paint. Anyone done something similar? Should I also try fine wire wool? Thanks John |

It will work John, BUT you must be very gentle. I would be using a fairly well rubbed bit of steel wool.
I would then rub it over with, yes, the dreaded RP7/WD40 type oil based penetrating oil on a cloth. Leave it on for five minutes, then dry it. Its Hammertone paint ( Hammerite in UK ) which is very tough and durable. Joe |

Most rust converters work by forming an organic complex with the rust. Which is black. So you will trade rust spots for black spots.
