Default TV Test Cards.

Hi, Thank you for this interesting topic.

A question: how can I get the pattern you display on your fourth photo as reproduced below? Is it compatible with 405 lines?

Thanks, Roger.

My understanding is that "Indian Head" test-card was as iconic in N America as Test-Card C is was the UK.

You could certainly show it on a UK set, but it would just be "wrong" in my opinion.

I'm not sure if their is any history of that testcard being used in Australia, I would doubt it, but maybe Hugo could comment.

Hi Graham,
I know that this "indian head" pattern is typical of us TV history and have been designed to display on 525 lines definition, so nothing to do with uk 405 lines.
I am just interested by the 'design' of this pattern and be curious of what it may look like on my LV30, with no offense of history.

It's very different from anything we've used in the UK, I hesitate to say unsophisticated in comparison. I say that because of any real half-tones in the image.

Even with the annotation, I'm still not sure what the numbers indicate.

If anything, it's reminiscent of the so-called Picasso test signal that the ITA companies used.

Looking further, you can see the influence in the French and Belgium 819 line test cards

Roger,

I have Richard Russell's testcard generator, so I can program any test card for 405, 525 and 625 into it. All it takes is the jpeg or other image of the testcard, his software & pcb and a serial cable and then his generator pcb acts as a stand alone unit producing a very high quality signal output that matches the standard selected when the image was loaded into it. I just got the Indian Head test card image from the net. I also use this generator for my BBC testcards.

If you just want 405 line testcards you could use the Jon Evans testcard generator (I built one of these, it is very good) and put the Indian head testcard image into that:

here is the one I made with a trial image on my Argus TV:

The Indian Head testcard , while not having the technical features of may testcard images, has some that are very useful, like the circles in the corners (like the Marconi card). But it has an interesting look to it that captures the imagination and the art of early monochrome TV, so I like it a lot.

Here's another that combines gratings and grey scale with corner circles.

Ah, the Marconi No 1. This was also a standard pattern when used in a 16/35mm film continuous loop for aligning broadcast telecine machines. I still have a frame or too.
