I have one of these and didn't realise that the sides were wood grain finished. I bought mine with just the curves front/top grained. They looked dreadful so I polished them back to the Bakelite and quite happy with the finish as the Bakelite has a nice deep lustre.

Thank you all for the kind words. The 'trick' to obtain the glowing effect is to build up the grain over the top of a plain gold substrate. Hard to be certain, but it looks like this was what was done originally too.
