I think the DVD/VHS combi sets were made by Samsung already by that time (around 2002), but the normal VHS sets were still made by Sony. I can verify a Sony mainboard and a Mitsumi power supply for this model. I'm not 100% sure about the drive but it's also likely still a Sony drive.

The mechanism is made by Sony, it is the S mechanism.

Bizarrely, the same thing happened to me today.

Machine starting playing and instantly stopping, take-brake repeatedly engaging.

Opened it up and found a dried out old tape label precisely as yours was!
