PCB / work holders
Does anyone know a half decent PCB holder type device which will hold a prototype circuit solid at an angle facing me. Getting a back ache doing it flat on the bench at the moment. Also the test leads tend to weigh a lot more than the prototype so tend to drag it off the bench occasionally.
I did look at a Panavise 350 but it's £100 and I'm trying to be a cheapo |

Re: PCB / work holders
Search eBay for BURNTEC PCB Holder Clamp.
Cheap, cheerful. I have two in our workshop, and one at home. Hold it down with a couple of blobs of blu tack...

Re: PCB / work holders
Thats what I use, does the job
One word of warning, don't try testing the assembled pcb while still in the holder, the clamps are aluminium not plastic and can short out tracks, guess how I know that? Peter |

Another vote for the Burntec unit. I equipped a full line for manual pcb assembly. The staff loved them.

Re: PCB / work holders
Looks very useful and good value, but the 8" maximum board width with that Burntek is a bit limiting. Does anyone do a wider version?

Re: PCB / work holders
The main 'beam' that the uprights are mounted on can be easily replaced by a longer version, in either metal box section or just a piece of appropriately sized wood, so >8" width is no problem.

What do they say... a picture..
The main 'beam' measures ca. 30 X 15mm, extend as long as you need. 'Flipping' the board over obviously gets more difficult, but not really an issue. Alan |

Re: PCB / work holders
Yes - if you look at the right-hand upright, there's a small black thrumbscrew knob clearly visible near the top, there's also another at the bottom, harder to see with the poor contrast, but the bottom one tightens the upright to the 'beam' (both uprights are the same). Takes 2 seconds to adjust.

Re: PCB / work holders
CPC sell a few types. The £4 ish duratool branded one looks similar to the burntec. I had a few PCBs to assemble and bought a Weller one. I'm sure I wouldn't have paid the current £70mplus price though. I mention it because I find the weight of it makes it really stable, but also it has a little arm for holding through hole components in place while you spin the board over and solder in place. If it's available at a better price, I'd reccomend it for that feature. Oh and it has plastic holders which means you don't have the shorting issue, but you can melt them with your iron.
