Default Replacement back panel material?

Does anywhere sell plain, pierced back panel board, from which a replacement back can be cut? Rather than trying to track down a good original. Or is the only option to drill a sheet of hardboard from the local diy shop

It's called peg board.

The original backs were made from ‘Millboard’, which you can still get but only in large sheets as used by vintage car restorers. Back panels would have been stamped out on presses and Millboard isn’t really suited to DIY use with for example, pillar drills. So it’s either hardboard or MDF. I’ve used both, as others have, but a little while ago I discovered ‘Medite’.

I related my experiences with it at this thread:

https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...d.php?t=189440

Much depends on how complex the original back is. At that link you’ll see a ‘444’ People’s Set replica back with hundreds of holes drilled on a pillar drill with a simple drilling jig. Often, if the back panel is missing rather than damaged, the first challenge is to get a pattern of an original.

Hope that might help.

What is the set? You never know, someone may have a spare from a scrapped set?

Those are small holes, does that provide adequate ventilation?

You can get it with 1/4 holes. It's a matter of Googling.

Personally I wouldn't use pre-pierced board myself, but that's what you asked about.

You may be able to find someone who'll CNC rout or laser cut MDF for you, but you'd have to produce a drawing for them to work from.

Radio Museum have a very good picture of a Pye15A back:-

https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/pye_15a.html

It shows holes drilled in hexagon formations. Do you have even part of the back which could be used as a drilling jig or is the back missing altogether?

I'm fairly sure I've got a spare back for a Pye 15A, not an uncommon set.
PM me if of interest and I will have a look.
Mike.

I was considering just finding some normal hardboard and drilling it myself, but thought i'd see if something precut was available.

Just had a look at Radiomuseums pic - no back whatseoever on my set, not even a little broken corner - and thats not at all what I expected it to look like!
