Hi all,
I have a DVR20KB, had for a while now .. everythings fine apart from a wavy image started today, i was playing 1 tape - all good, played another and it looks like my 4 head drum is failing - looking for a good contact/group to source replacement parts.

Cheers andy

Not sure or not that is failing as you normally get and i have lost correct term, black bits across the picture. Psu caps cause a few oddball effects.

Meteor trails? That's what I've always called them & sometimes can be a bad earth to the drum on some kit.

Wavy picture (hum bar?) more like caps I would expect.

That doesn't look like heads failing imo. you usually get fm noise such as "comet tails" after black to white, or white to black transitions where heads are worn.

I suspect the OP means the drum as opposed to the head disc. Could be, but thorough cleaning might be a good idea first.
Is that a Funai deck?

Only betamax uses head discs, from the phrase "4 head drum" I think the OP is referring to the upper drum. I think you're referring to the lower drum (static part)?

Point taken! I meant upper head drum and lower head drum rather than head disc and drum. Apologies for any confusion. However, an erratic lower drum could well cause the wobbling referred to. The heads look OK to me.

The only two places I know of who still do AV spares are Donberg in Ireland, and Wagner in Australia.

Is that unlocked chroma? Or some kind of interference patterning? PSU caps would be my first check, they're a damn sight cheaper too!

To answer my own question, it is the dreaded Funai deck. PSU capacitors aren't a big problem with these chassis. What IS a problem is removing the deck if you haven't done it before. If you do want a drum complete with heads I'm sure I have one, though I'd try and exhaust other possibilities frst. Does the drum spin freely by hand?

Seen that effect on vcr's caused by interference from PSU's in neighboring devices if any are nearby. Could try moving the vcr away from them, or turning the mains power off them to see if it clears. Also some PSU in newer sets that you might be using the vcr on, may interfere with the picture.

Doesn't look like a head fault to me. I'd look at the power rails with a 'scope first, to see if they are clean. I've had many vcr's both domestic & professional, with similar looking problems, & it's usually been 'mush' from various un-decoupled power rails. Usually, its not been capacitors in the PSU, but elsewhere, across the supply rails, mostly capacitors that read o.k. capacitance-wise, but have very poor ESR.
I once changed over 100 SMD caps on a Panasonic broadcast VCR, painful job, but they'd all gone high ESR

Could be interference as older plasma TV's can cause slight picture disturbances..although it tends to be more of an issue if the covers are off the machine. Perhaps a nearby Wi-Fi router/ device?
