The cabinet restoration is almost complete, just a few details to attend to.
The control panels are a bit shabby so I'll remove the old lacquer and refinish them this week.

One word... WOW!

That's an amazing result David and proves you really are back on form again.

What things of beauty those cabinets were! You certainly were buying craftsmanship in the 30s. These sets may have cost as much as a small village, but boy did it look like it was worth it!

Really looking forward to further instalments.

Hi Steve,
I'm certainly feeling a lot better now and so is my enthusiasm for all vintage matters and there is sure a lot of catching up to be done. The HMV 900 is one the projects that is nearing completion.
And there is lots more to follow.
It's absolutely amazing how EMI managed to produce such high quality cabinets in reasonable numbers. The matching of the veneers is superb and so is the attention to detailing.
You'll even find a humble HMV battery table radio set receives similar attention to achieving a high quality finish.

That restoration job, David, just blows my mind. Talk about bringing things back to life; most of us can do the electronics bit without too much trouble but to do such cabinet work? That's an entirely different question.

I have magnified your picture X1000 David and you have a small discrepancy in the veneer about 2" from the top on the right side...

Brilliant David. Absolutely stunning job. It will be a real good looker when assembled.

Hi Mark,
Even a humble battery table set received some attention to detail and finish.
The model 682.

I was only able to start going to the NVCF again, at the "new" Warwickshire Venue, for the first time in 2011. Apart from being very impressed by the location and the event itself, I was able to see this cabinet at first hand on the Steve Harris stand along with a crowd of others. It seemed that most people had very much mixed feelings ie a great interest [of course] combined with being very dubious about the prospect of anyone saving a cabinet in such a terminal condition. The photos on the original thread convey some sense of this but I think that "you had to be there" to get a sense of what a daunting prospect it was, worm dust and all. What an amazing and painstaking effort!

I think I get almost as much fun restoring the cabinets David as I get from repairing them. I have French polished a number of radiograms and table receivers with a very satisfying result. That 900 is a mammoth job involving wood replacement and I think I would have to take lessons from you to obtain anything like the result you have obtained. Fantastic! John.

Hi John,
I've certainly enjoyed working on this cabinet. The most satisfying thing is that another rare set has been saved.
It is almost ready to be returned to its owner. Just a few minor details to attend to.

That's the speaker grill and baffle fitted. The cabinet resto job is almost complete.
The cabinet lid will receive it's final polish shortly.
