The Most Beautiful TV Set
In your own opinion which is the most beautiful, gorgeous, handsomest television set ever made?
Be it Teak, Bakelite, Mahogany or 70s Plastic (not certain what type) I started this thread as I would like to see the different designs that manufacturers have created to attract the public. Obviously there are quite a few sets that I have not seen before. I like the Ekco T161, particularly that the main control knobs are out of sight but easily accessible. (I have one of these)

Now I know what inspired Liebskind to design that university building on the Holloway Road.

Re: The Most Beautiful TV Set
A controversial choice here and Marmite to some, you either love em or hate em!
The Iconic Bush TV12/TV22 & its family has to be up there as one of the most pleasing sets to the eye. Perhaps the TV equivalent of the Round EKCO wireless. My second choice would be the PYE V4 (as my avatar) again a marmite moment, but PYE blazed a trail with the look when others were doing the standard box and the real beauty is on the inside, so advanced for the year. Re: The Most Beautiful TV Set
Hi
A difficult one as, let's face it, most TVs are, by their nature, pretty ugly things. Mind you, someone will doubtless nominate the Keracolor, the TV22 or even the Philips Discoverer as they were quite unusual - though were they pretty? I recall Ferguson/Thomson commissioned the Philippe Starck design studio to come up with designs for their range in the early nineties, but the resulting dark grey plastic cabinets were almost as dull as the chassis inside... I think for us the nicest set is one which we've just fixed a difficult fault on using our undoubted skill and is now displaying a fine picture! Glyn |

How true, having just finished restoring a GEC BT322, I so wanted to nominate it, for the reason you mention but also for its great style too, but opted for the ones I posted above. It would be my 3rd choice though. I don't know if it's just me but I'm starting to see the inner beauty of these sets too with regards to the sets internal working design and layout. I wonder if people might also suggest their beautiful chassis design favourites. The Philips G6. Especially after you've fixed one...
The Baird 703. Cheers, Steve P.

Re: The Most Beautiful TV Set
I still like the very slim 'Ultra Bermuda' of the '60s, it crammed a reasonably sized screen into an almost impossible space, the advent of 110 degree CRTs helped but I still think it was a smart set. Haven't seen one for years, does anybody have one?

Re: The Most Beautiful TV Set
Being stuck in the 30s I would vote for the RCA TRK12:
http://www.terramedia.co.uk/media/te.../RCA_TRK12.jpg ..but I could be persuaded to the Marconi 702: http://www.tvhistory.tv/1937-Marconi-702-Brochure1.JPG Peter Last edited by peter_scott; 8th Feb 2011 at 3:26 pm. |

Re: The Most Beautiful TV Set
Hi,
I've always liked the GEC BT7092, and the HMV /Marconiphone pre-war 5 or 7 inch tv/radio's. I've only ever seen one of the pre-war sets, and that had been converted with modern internals TV22 still does it for me though regards, Lloyd. |

Re: The Most Beautiful TV Set
Hi
The G6 Steve? Bit of an ugly duckling, that, both inside and out. But a thing of beauty when you've got all the wires back in the right place and put the back on for the fifth and final time... However for sheer craftsmanship I suppose the pre-war marquetry veneered sets with art-deco touches may well be the ones. Glyn |

Re: The Most Beautiful TV Set
I can't think of a set more iconic and pleasing to the eye than the TV22, but then I'm biased towards anything bakelite.

Re: The Most Beautiful TV Set
Hi,
405 wise the Pye "Washboard" (sorry I can't recall the model/chassis number at the moment) Dual standard wise The HMV Thorn 1400 series and similarly the single standard 1500 series HMV models with their nice wooden cabinets. Colour wise the HMV 2715 (I think) does it for me, once again for the wooden cabinet. Andrew |

Re: The Most Beautiful TV Set
IMHO its not so much the most beautiful but the least offensive for the longest period.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but modified by the age. The Philips and B&O sets of the late 70's and early 80's were not beautiful (although I always loved the look of the ULTRA Bermuda's during that time, WHITES always good!) They just aged less slowly. So looked old fashioned less slowly Teak and black was in fashion for what? 20 years?. But If I had to name a set I think beautiful its the BUSH TV43

Re: The Most Beautiful TV Set
My favourite (a bit of shameless self-promotion) has to be the nickel-over-copper Retrovisor Imperial. Hopelessly uneconomic to make and to my mind resembling a huge toaster, there is only one of these in existence.
You either love or hate this sort of thing. Steve
