Default Member's Suggestions for one easily adaptable 17" TV?

Hi!

This one is entirely open to Member's Suggestions!

After I've built my Hedgehog, I would like to restore one 405–line TV, about 17", as follows;

a) Suitable chassis layout with room in cabinet & on chassis to add an isolated–primary "R–Core" mains transformer, and amenable to conversion from 300mA series to parallel 6.3V heaters – bridge h.t. or full–wave silicon diode (as suits transformer), using one of the small square single–hole rectifiers;

b) Good CRT likely to be worth the time and investment in conversion;

c) Suitable 13–ch. tuner that can take "E–series" valves – I believe some tuners had the heater mid-point brought out for this purpose;

d) Line o/p transformer not liable to failure!

Good afternoon,
The Pye PTV is a very good candidate here. It is a very well designed 405 line television with a decent Mullard CRT, and has an earthed chassis. It also has a 13 channel tuner. It is also reasonably compact and lightweight.

As this set uses a transformer and 6.3V valves, there is no nasty voltage dropper resistors to cook the components or back cover!!

It is made up of 3 chassis. One holds the timebases and the other holds the receiver and IF stages. Both of these are hinged and swing out from the television main framework for servicing and alignment. The third chassis is along the bottom and back of the television and contains the mains transformer and power supply components.

Would help to understand the reasons for want to convert to 6.3v; if it's for mains isolation you still need an HT transformer so why not continue running the valves in series?

Compromise on the screen size and the PTV, as Chris suggested, is at least isolated from day 1 (as is Ekco TMB272 but I guess a 9" screen may be too much of a compromise!)

Otherwise how about mid/late 50s Ekco ? Never thought I'd recommend a M*zd* CRT set but the later 50's 17" ones seem to last well. Also usually if there is gonna be LOPT trouble, it's not the windings, it's the plastic they are formed on so you can at least visually inspect before investing in a project. Also plenty about and being a mid/late 50's box with two controls at the front they tend to be cheap too.

Evening Chris!

That one ticks all my boxes as my first 405–line TV project for next year!

The reason I prefer 6.3V parallel heater chains is because I don't want to be dealing with ancient crumbly old droppers and trying to chase thro' 16 or 18 valves in series to find out the duffy one – with a 6.3V heater line you only have to glance in the back, and I've not rebuilt my H.S.V.T. yet!

That sounds more like a specialist conversion, than a 'restoration'.

A bit of both really, I'd be restoring the circuits to their original design performance, but apart from changing the heaters from series to parallel and adding an isolated power supply transformer, the circuits would otherwise be as originally built!

Here's hoping you find a Pye PTV then!
