Make sure when untangling that the spiral isn't 'inside-out'. Sounds obvious, but sometines slack cords look superficially similar either way.

I'm not sure if it is available in the UK but here in Australia I have used spray-on whiteboard cleaner (bottle has has a press down pump) with very good results. It cleans both grime and ink marks off plastic cases and cords. I spray some cleaner onto a cotton rag and then wipe the item with the rag. So far I have not done any damage to any plastic EXCEPT transfers.
