Default Closeup Photo suggestion

A possible way to get clearer more useful closeup pictures from smart 'phones or other "cameras" with no decent macro capability:

Most recent 'phones have reasonable lenses and megapixel resolution so if you take a picture from as close as you can get one in good focus then crop it to show only the item of interest before uploading, the result can be better than a blurred closeup.

Example attached of an original picture and cropped "closeup".

Yes, in focus is a great bonus, modern cameras are astonishingly good and when you think they are but a few cubic millimetres in size, remarkable.

Modern digital cameras (and phone cameras) are fantastic when you think about it but there are still loads of out of focus photos, on auction websites particularly!
I often wonder if they are out of focus deliberately!
I still have an old Samsung digital camera, 2MP if I recall correctly, with a 1950s close up lens blu-tac d to the front so I could take close ups!

Have you tried using a mobile phone looking through a jewellers eyeglass?

Attached is micro SD card through a X10 and X20 eyeglass.

I'm amazed by the quality of pictures taken with smartphones, I have an Android Samsung Galaxy 4 (a bit of a relic compared with newer phones) but its camera is more than good enough for me. What has surprised me is how good it is as microscope!

I downloaded the free version of an app called 'Cozy Magnifier & Microscope plus'. It allows me to take close ups of components, PCBs etc with detail I was unaware a phone camera could achieve. An M5 nut (or 2BA!) will fill the screen.

Picture is an example I picked at random

I get some pretty good shots on my iPhone down a microscope! Here’s a couple of the Hedghog standards converter I built!

The multi-megapixel images from newer cameras and smartphone cameras these days do lend themselves to being cropped, and still being useable, certainly wouldn’t have done it with my old Fuji 2 megapixel digital camera! And who remembers the first camera-phones?! The images from those were abysmal! Pictures came out more like a coloured smudge, with no recognisable detail, it’s a surprise they ever caught on!

Lloyd

How do you mount or hold a phone to a microscope eyepiece?

The pictures I take using the Cozy app just use the phone only (which needs to be very steadily held or mounted)

I set up what I want to photograph under the microscope first, then just align the camera with the eyepiece on the microscope, let it do it’s autofocus thing and hit the shutter button. You sometimes get the corners cut off, but you can zoom in a bit before taking the picture, or crop it afterwards. The microscope sat work are better for this as the lens for the eyepiece is bigger.

Using my Nokia 6.1 with the cozy app suggested, picture shows a £1 coin, the neck edge of the Queen's head showing tiny letters. Still not at max microscope magnification as picture gets speckly then.
Not bad for a free app.
