Webbing strap for R600. Solution or sacrelige?
Hi all.
Just finished an early Roberts R600. Had neither the time or the budget for a "proper handle", so made (or rather SWMBO did. And what a brilliant job!) one from a length of 5/8 wide black nylon webbing. She sewed two peices together to get the required thickness, and then zig- zagged it along its length. It does fit into the end clasps(not shown but they are there, honest) and owner was pleased. Solution or sacrelige? Vote now!

Very neat job. You can always fit a 'proper' handle in the future.

Result looks good, and also nice when an opportunity arises to involve the "other half".

Solution.
It's not even un-authentic. Back in the days when everything was not made to be disposable, people repaired stuff with whatever came to hand.

Re: Webbing strap for R600. Solution or sacrelige?
Fantastic.
As others have said, it's entirely reversible, looks good and ad-hoc repairs would have been common when these sets were current. I bought my mum a green R200 from a jumble sale many years ago which was perfect apart from its tatty handle. She promptly made a new one (using her pre-war Singer sewing machine) from some green leather salvaged from an old raincoat bought at another jumble sale. No piping but it looks smart and has lasted 15 years already. N. |

Thanks for your comments so far everyone.

Seriously though, she made a splendid job of it, and it took her an hour and a half. She had to sew two peices of webbing together to obtain the correct thickness. She tacked the layers together with white cotton to stop them moving while being sewn. White makes the tacking thread easier to see against the black background and black thread whilst being removed. Then she marked out a zig-zag with tailors chalk, and sewed over it with black thread. She will not be taking orders!!
