Default Yaesu FT290RM

Received my new radio today. How interesting. It had been described as having a mutek front end fitted which it was clear from the pictures it hadnt. Instead however its had a number of modififcations performed by A.R.E, which are listed on the leaflet that came with it. Havent had chance to try it out yet, but its extremely tidy for its age. I had put the cart before the horse and picked up a Mutek preamp, whilst looking for a radio. Ill list it for sale here as its surplus to requirements now.

Does anyone know the thickness of the battery pack foam, and where to source please ?

Found various suppliers of foam on ebay. Had it on the comms test set today, its extremely sensitive and giving full output. Not checked the audio quality. Giving it a good clean and polish.
With its history, and condition its definitely a keeper

3mm neoprene foam sheet fitted. Ordered some high capacity NI-MH AA cells and AA-C adaptors. On air testing shows it to be quite lively

I want to replace the ty-raps with some clear lacing cord though

Hi i am glad to see i am not the only one to use a beacon to do a quick test of a radios performance in my case GB3VHF on 144.430 in Trosley, great radio Mick Just noticed you are running this without its aerial this forms part of the final tuning and can result in a blown final transistor

NiMh AA cells and adaptors fitted. Its cost less than a third of the price of C cells.
Its still on its original memory back up battery which fortunately hasnt leaked. Ordered a surface mounted coin cell holder to make future replacement easier.

Ive also cleaned the case, its come up very nicely

Battery removed and Id decided to recap around the 8.6v regulator while it was out. It was drifting slightly on warm up and when listening to a beacon, if a bit of impulse noise was received, it drifted a few hz for a second or so and settled. Service notes indicated checking the 8.6v rail. One of the removed caps looks to be dodgy

Pvc piping has arrived. It looks and feels like it will work, and has a good bit of stretch to it
