Info on TR9
I am new to the group and don't know how I could have not known of its existence before now! (Thanks to GMR for the intro) I am looking for any information regarding the RAF TR9 Set - I have the receiver part of one of these and can't find any information anywhere. I know that mine has been modified slightly which was a common thing to do with surplus equipment. I would like to put it back into its original condition as it seems complete except for the valves. Surely these sets can't be that rare, or am I just not looking in the right place for info?
Cheers Steve |

Re: Info on TR9
They are not common because they were superseded by better equipment during WW2. Generally the aircraft using the TR9 were later fitted with four channel VHF sets which had the advantage that the shorter range prevented the enemy from picking up wireless activity around airfields in the UK. If an HF set was required, the TR1196 provided four crystal controlled channels. Even these are not common. If the earlier equipment had survived in stores until the end of the war, it is likely that most of it would have been dumped. The TR9 wouldn't really have been much use to the enthusiast so would have found little interest in the surplus market. At that time people were looking for equipment to use rather than collect and the magazines were full of articles on how to modify surplus equipment. We are now trying to find the stuff that escaped modification or can be restored to its original condition!
The main information on the TR9 should be somewhere in Air Publications so Hendon Museum may be the place to start. This site is a useful source of information on RAF wireless equipment: http://home.btconnect.com/gmb/airequip.htm Edward Last edited by Brased; 25th Jan 2006 at 6:37 pm. |

Re: Info on TR9
Thanks Edward,
I appreciate the info. That has really encouraged me to do the restoration and to do it properly. It wasn't that long ago that I was in two minds whether to strip it for the useful bits and dump the rest as it seems a pretty basic thing - nothing particularly special. I only realised what model it was from a late forties Practical Wireless magazine which showed a modified one like mine but alas no circuit diagram for it in its original state or any photographs that show it in its original state. Once again thanks for the info. Steve |

Thanks Ed,
I'll dig them out of the attic and have a look. Ah, if only time travel was a possibility! Steve |

Re: Info on TR9
Thanks very much for the pictures Edward. These show things very clearly indeed. Nice to see how things are supposed to look. I think it might be getting near the time to clear down the bench and make a start!
Great stuff Steve |

Re: Info on TR9
I have some very scrappy notes on the TR9 including circuit diagrams - just haven't got round to publishing them yet. I'll did it out if you are still looking.

Re: Info on TR9
I borrowed a copy of Air Publication 1938 (1944 reprint) and scanned Chap 10 which covers the TR9H and its installation with the A1134. There are eight pages of this as tif images (1.6Mb total) and I didn't want to clutter up the file server with this specialist stuff. I've sent Steve a copy but if anyone else would like it too please get in touch.

Re: Info on TR9
I have now added my notes on the TR9D and TR9F for anyone who wants to compare the various models.
