Wanted DESPARATELY to get there yesterday - rushed my day's work and got as far as Warminster before I sadly concluded I just wouldn't make it before having to turn back.

..would have been nice just to visit once and buy something, but hey ho!

Ladies and gentlemen
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your custom and support over the years.
We were glad to supply a service to those who would rather replace and repair than throw away, preserving bygone eras.
Unfortunally as time waits for no man it is necessary to draw a close to a successful business and we look forward to our retirement.
However you have a final oppitunity to purchase items in bulk,on Saturday 2nd Febuary 2008 doors will be open at 9am
Call in, spend your money,Say farewell

Regards,

Reg

Called in last Saturday as a final visit. Had a chat with Reg and his other half. Not long to go now. Most of the small stuff has been sold. Some test equipment and other stuff still remaining. Still seems a shame that they are shutting up shop but as Reg says, neither of them are getting any younger. Attached is a photo of them both.

I drove past last week thinking I might still grab a bargain.
Alas the place is empty. They really did shift all that gear.
I think I saw a couple of resistors on the pavement outside !
Regards to Reg and the last real radio shop.

Well at least Hannays managed to last a long time its such a shame they had to close, but I suppose things have to move on as there is not a lot of call for our stuff anymore its so sad.

Well, luckily we have a Maplin store opening in Bath this month, it will be in Westgate Buildings. They still seem to have a range of traditional components and should help to fill the gap.

I'll have to have a trip up Beatrice Road and see ef Eley's are still there. Although it was never quite the same when they put in the glass counters .. but they had a shed out the back full of stuff, a proper Aladdin's cave. I was a frequent visitor in the 1980s. I can't imagine why I've not been up there since moving into this area!! Less than a couple of miles away

I remember the first Mr Hanney. I was about 10 (53 yrs ago) my mother used to accompany me (the trade off was a trip around city shops) on the tortuous journey (by bus) from Trowbridge. He was a tall bespectacled man (he also used a hearing aid). He was helpfull in placing resistors on a piece of card with the value of each resistor written on it. A useful shop over the years if you wanted components the same day.

Yes- I remember him too.

When I was at Bath Technical School, some of the classrooms were spread all over the city; metalwork was in the afternoon at Brougham Hayes, and I walked there from the school in Henry Street so I could have a spare bus ticket - about 1.5 miles, passing Hanneys' shop, where I used to buy components if pocket money allowed. The Mullard 3-3 and 5-10 kits were well out of my budget!

Talking about old radio shops , has any one visited or had any dealings with Mr Birkett of Lincoln he seems to carry some very old and interesting stock.

I have bought component packs from Birkett's through ads in some of the electronics magazines. Details of the shop are at http://www.zyra.org.uk/birkett.htm .

Thanks chaps, for making me feel the weight of my years once again. Very sad to see the last embers of what once was a robust and lively sector of interest, in the days when building your own still held sway and people had more sense - and self esteem - than money.
Ah well...

This reminds me of the relatively recent demise of Tandy's (who were experts at making money out of the hobbyist, selling 2 resistors in a blister pack for 99p) .. this is what we were left with when a lot of the small scale electronics shops disappeared .. suppose the only readily available equivalent we have these days is Maplin, where we can at least obtain the stuff we want, having browsed through the glossy catalogue and looked past all the budget hi-fi and computer stuff they really want to sell ...

Don't forget CPC and RS, and a myriad of smaller more specialised companies - Google is your friend. Not actual shops, per se, but I don't think we are totally stuck for the things we want.

I think we are starting to be a bit OT now, though, as the original thread was about Hanney's.

As Hanneys has now closed, it is time for the thread to do the same.
