It's because the "thumbnails" are the full size images just squashed up small, and are not proper small images. Even the big images are squashed up a bit. This is poor website design, and leads to slow performance even on 6Mb broadband.

Indeed, there's no point in using high resolution images such as those on a typical website as the detail just won't be visible. The thumbnails can be very low res and with lots of jpeg compression to boot, and they'll still look OK. You should aim for an image size of 20k or less for the thumbnails.

It's a good idea to test any website for usability using a dialup connection. This will give a dramatic indication of unnecessary graphical detail.

Hi,

Your father has made a very good job at the restorations, the little dansette gem looks absolutely brand new.

Well done , his pricing is very reasonable

I just had a look at the site and found the link to 'Misc vintage radio sounds bits and pieces' takes us to the already-linked 'How do I buy one?' page.

At the time I viewed the site (23.25) the image downloads weren't absurdly slow....but slow enough to be annoying.

The Dansette models look nice but I was a little dampened to read they'd been converted to use AA cells (Personally I don't like this sort of thing when the 'proper' battery is still available - the PP7 in this case).

It is stated with the other radios that a PP9 is required, but with the Dansette models there's no mention that they should use a PP7. This suggests the author doesn't know which battery these models used.

Sorry if I'm being negative but it's just the impression I get from the site.

PP7s are available, but not easily. Many non-enthusiasts who just want a vintage radio would probably welcome this conversion. I agree it's a difficult call though.

They are available if you look! Maplin do them, that I do know.

For the website, try looking at (and copying!) this page:

I'm probably being a bit too critical here, but quite a bit of proof-reading is needed on some of the pages, and indeed, the images are a bit slow.

Good luck, though, and welcome!

Looks like the "magic fairy" has been at the site overnight and it's working a lot better and faster this morning, although as Mike Phelan says it could still do eith a little proof reading

The image sizes haven't changed. They have probably been cached on your computer now which will make them load much faster.

That's what I thought too.

And the pages do load slowly.

However, I guess Rik's dad has only recently launched the site - teething troubles do occur! No doubt these will be sorted in due course, and future updates won't feature the same mistakes.

Best of luck with the venture!

It loaded perfectly quickly here, and I liked the quality of the images. When will we see some nice valved woodies?!

Good luck with the venture although I must confess I personally don't buy sets that have already been restored.

Not here. In spite of broadband, it was far slower than a typical site on dial-up!

Best of luck with the venture though

Not loading too badly for me. The pictures are a tad slow though.

My report (today, 9-01-08) is same as Richard Newman's above.

Pity about the two buttons that take you to the same place, since I am actively looking for a few vintage parts.

Al / Skywave.
