Hey folks is anyone aware of a paint service able to provide the black wrinkle finish found on vintage equipment i.e. Collins radio etc?

Rattle-cans of the stuff - "VHT" - are available from companies like Frost - https://www.frost.co.uk/vht-black-wrinkle-finish-310ml/

It works well - I have done quite a few bits of homebrew test-gear using it [my style-aesthetic for homebrew stuff is very much 1940s/50s industrial/military]. On aluminium I use a very fine misting of acid-etch primer [U-Pol Acid #8, available from Halfords] to improve adhesion.

I used a local powder coating business for my Collin TCS cabinets, they look pretty good. They did some Hallicrafters kit too, a big BC-939 ATU and an HT-11 marine set.

Not cheap but worth it.

Also try the paint for MGB dashboards, available from various MG parts specialists.

Long ago, as I once mentioned before , it was called " Camera Crackle Finish". Or that was available in little tins to brush on.

The Collins paint may look black, but it is actually called "St. James Gray" and is its own special shade. That being said, I don't know of anyone making wrinkle spray cans of St. James Gray .

Hi Ian,

I've had equipment cases black wrinkle finished by Dumelow's in Burton on Trent - easy to Google their details - I was very pleased with their work.
