Default BT Coastal Radio Station North East

Hi all,

Whilst visiting my daughter I took a few piccy's of a Radio station just up the coast near Seaton Sluice . Don't know much about it's history but I wonder if it was to replace the now long gone Cullercoats Radio station ?

There are 3 x visible mast's and the main one is by the transmitter building, another is some distance away but does not appear to have any antenna's fixed to it. The last one [picc 4] looks like a small VHF whip with ground plane elements pointing up at an angle.

Dotted around in the surrounding field are redundant concrete anchor blocks. Also, parked outside the transmitter hall were a couple of BT liveried vans.

I would be very interested to know if an other members have more info on this interesting site.

Sorry for the picture quality ... I dare not get get closer for fear of falling foul of the trespass law.

I've been past here loads of times and I have always wondered what the site is for. There is nothing on the internet about it.

I assumed it was for marine communications rather than a radio transmitter.

It's a bit of a mystery.

I'll probably be passing again this afternoon.

It would be interesting to park nearby with a portable spectrum analyser and see what (if anything) is coming out. That might give us a clue

I was wondering if it was a 2182 kHz installation.

The US Coastguard gave up their monitoring watch on 2182kHz some years ago.
Has Europe? Not so sure.

The multi channel ship to shore stations such as Cullercoats Scheveningen etc might be gone but might a single frequency of MF on 2182 kHz survive for Coast Guard, RNLI etc.

It took a lot of internet searching to find this one as there is almost no information on line, but it was the transmitting station for Cullercoats Radio (GCC).

Scroll down to the bottom of this page:

http://www.coastalradio.org.uk/uksta...llercoats.html

where you will find::

"The following nine photographs show the remote TX site for Cullercoats Radio at the remote transmitting site which was located 4 miles to the north at East Hartley. Navtex Transmissions are still made from this site on 518 & 490KHz . "

Well done Dave. That seems to put it to bed nicely.

490kHz and 518kHz are used for Navtex.

Cullercoats was one of the options I had to do my amateur Morse test in '84. I drove out to Portpatrick and did it there instead.

I did my morse test at Mablethorpe , also on the east coast, in 1980.

Thank you all for taking an interest in my query, in particular to Dave for the internet research with the resultant piccy's of the actual site. Sure I noticed a pile of old antenna's beneath the generator louvres ?

Being a layman I had to google Navtex but it all made sense once I did.

My only question remaining is ... are BT responsible for the transmitter maintenance, or just the building & presumed remote control circuits feeding the building.... Their vans were painted dark blue but not sure if that is significant ?
