Are reverse-charge calls still available in the UK ?

Yes, but it doesn't involve dialling 100 and asking the operator like I had to do in boarding school in 1961
I think it is a couple of private companies that do it now and it's all automated Serjei!
It's one of the few occasions where American style mnemonic numbers are actually useful.

<edit> I just dialled 100, first time in at least two decades, and was suprised there was an option to speak to a human operator (option 4).

You know, I was a teenager in the 2000s and I remember my mum telling me to use a phone box if I was late coming home from school. She told me to call the operator and ask to reverse the charges. I did it a few times and it still worked! I wonder if you still can do that this way round if you were a bit old fashioned? Because I remember the reverse charge phone lines being advertised too back then.

Although it's still possible to make reverse-charge calls, it's very expensive for the person on the receiving end. The charges are a lot more than the standard 60p that the caller would have put into a payphone. In that situation, the recipient would be charged more than £4 to accept the call.

It's always been more expensive than a standard direct-dialled call because someone has to pay for the operator's time. Most people don't realise this until the charges appear on their bill.

Directory Enquiries is another service that used to be provided free, but has now become very expensive, again because it involves a human operator. At least there are alternatives. Business phone numbers and the BT phone book can be searched online, and those who can't use printed telephone directories because of blindness or other disabilities can register for free directory enquiries.
