Microphone Hand No. 7
I've had this Microphone Hand No. 7 for yonks and never really took much notice of it until now. I presume it's for use in WW2 tanks? What is that 'loop' for in the cable? Any other info? What kind of value?

Re: Microphone Hand No. 7
I have a number of these, & also some 'Mic hand, No8' which is similar, but without the rubber mouthpiece.
The loop is interesting, probably used as a method of preventing the rubber snatch plug from pulling out? I paid 3/11d for mine , way back in the early 60's! A search on the net will probably find today's asking price. I once bought a job lot of these, in around 1978. I took the carbon mic inserts out of them, tested each one, & then re-packaged. I then sold them to the BBC at Brookman's Park, where they were desperate for them, to replace the faulty ones in their internal 300 series internal phones. I think I made about 10p one each one. Thanks David, interesting. But re the above, I'm not sure what you're referring to there?

A blast from the past. I remember bins full of those in the surplus shops, along with WS19 junction boxes and WT8 morse keys.

Re: Microphone Hand No. 7
Are they the ones with the carbon mic insert in, type 10 or 13, or has it a dynamic capsule in it?
I bought a couple of the type with the carbon mic insert from J. Birkett, along with two pairs of DLR5 headphones, about twenty years ago, and paid - I think - six quid each for the mics. I sold them about ten years ago on Ebay but didn't make much on them - maybe a tenner each? Of course, a lot can happen in ten years.

Re: Microphone Hand No. 7
Is the loop for hanging it up? I didn't know they were called snatch plugs, is that a generic for all sorts of rubber mil. spec. connectors that pull out easily from any angle without damage.

Re: Microphone Hand No. 7
That is indeed correct, useful in case of a need to rapidly exit a petrol engine armoured vehicle.

Re: Microphone Hand No. 7
What I refer to as a 'loop' is a single loop of cable wrapped tightly around a plastic 'plug' then bound with strong cord. So it's not a loop to use as a hanging point, there's no hole in there. See close up photo.

Re: Microphone Hand No. 7
This mic is part of a headset/mic assy. The headset joined the loom at that junction point but looks to have been cut off. There are photos on the web showing the complete assy.
