Strange radio, military?
Came across these parts from clearing FiL house.
A small radio, overall about 9.1/2"x4"x2" with about the same for the power supply. The tuning coild are plugged in at one end, got set for long waves, set 2.5 to 4.5 MHz, 4.5 to 8 MHz and 8 to 15 MHz. Five valves, all B7G. Odd thing is the power pack can run from both 100 to 235V AC and DC. Just looks military, also one valve is a JAN 114. Seems to have the various metal covers even though unattached. Any ideas please, new to me. |

Miniature Communications Receiver (MCR) 1.
There should be a ID plate screwed to the receiver's case

Also known as the Biscuit Tin receiver because it and its kit was dropped for the SOE in a biscuit tin in about 1943.

Highly collectable, especially with the power supply.

Re: Strange radio, military?
Would you believe it, turned the rather battered cover plate over and there was the MCR1 label.
Thanks for all the comments, now what to do with it! |

Re: Strange radio, military?
I think your first step is to find how come he had it.
Was he involved in SOE activities during the war? You might have stumbled on a clue to some interesting family history. It could just have been a bit of surplus gear he bought for no special reason. Spy sets of all sorts seem to be sought after by collectors with consequently high prices. So it's either a family heirloom worth keeping or it's something that could raise a bit of money for some family purpose. David
