Re: BBC TV: The Repair Shop
Closure is coming Lawrence, though I look forward to watching the GEC transistor restoration I recorded yesterday.

Re: BBC TV: The Repair Shop
Relating to the "much loved and cherished family item", it struck me that these items would probably be worthless to anyone else and so the restoration was only of value to the owner(s) of said item.
I watched the programme on Tuesday 23rd while waiting to watch "Holby City", as I thought it would be better than "Eastenders" and ended at the same time. It was better than "Eastenders" (as is anything, IMHO). Colin. |

Re: BBC TV: The Repair Shop
It's my guess that it is a win-win for the people needing things restored and the programme-makers. People get things repaired that would otherwise be prohibitably expensive to get done, and the TV people get series that is relatively cheap to make: no scriptwriters or expensive sets needed.
I have never been to the recording of a TV show, but did once go to a recording of a rather dire radio comedy show that only ran for the one series and has not been repeated. One of the jokes got little response from the audience, and after the performance we had to remain while they repeated some of the sections "for technical reasons". The poor joke got the same response, but on the broadcast, roars of laughter were heard. Last edited by emeritus; 24th Jul 2019 at 10:15 pm. |

Re: BBC TV: The Repair Shop
I rather like the 'The Repair Shop' you never know whats going to turn up and it's lovely to see the delight in the faces when they are united with their restored items.
Often these are items that have no monetary value, just a sentimental attachment. Often as with the antiques roadshow it's all about the value, it's refreshing that this is absent in The Repair Shop.

My wife and I never miss it, it's a gentle enjoyable series not to be taken too seriously or to heart.

Absolutely. That’s how we view it. It has definitely improved my wife’s understanding of the skills involved in restoration, and my own dotty obsessions have gone up in her estimation.

Re: BBC TV: The Repair Shop
So you can now walk confidently into the house with another set under your arm and mutter 'Repair Shop', AND accrue brownie points at the same time?

Re: BBC TV: The Repair Shop
A query re the hour long format, does that include ad breaks on the BBC?
Asking on the basis that here in Oz the program runs 45 minutes on our ABC channel that has no advertising. |

Re: BBC TV: The Repair Shop
No ad breaks on BBC! What they’ve done with this current batch of programmes is added the restoration of a fourth item, extending each episode from 45 minutes (3 items) to an hour (4 items).

Re: BBC TV: The Repair Shop
The first two have been a pair of German WWI-vintage wire cutters and a pair of Chinese ornamental curtain holders, both involving some interesting metal restoration techniques. I don’t know what else will be shown, but these all must have been left over from a previous filming or completed too late to appear in the first screening of Series 4.

Re: BBC TV: The Repair Shop
I like the extended programme, however the sound guy appears to have added a constant background noise of a looped sample of an angle grinder for ambient effect. As someone who has lived next door to the Perpetual DIY'er, this is particularly grating and I watched the wire cutter episode with the sound muted, to no great detriment.

Re: BBC TV: The Repair Shop
I watched the programme that included the restoration of an ugly old G.E.C portable radio.
Classic "TV" of course, with pathos and contrivance laid on thick. I loved the "standard issue" boffin with his ancient soldering iron, analogue meter and the backdrop of instruments including a digital oscilloscope!! His assertion that the local oscillator is the most crucial part of any radio (eh?) and was almost certainly at fault had me chuckling as he tinkered with the ferrite rod antenna. No sign of any "'elf n safety" tenets being observed much either? I imagine that everyone lived happily ever after though! Nick |

Re: BBC TV: The Repair Shop
The oscillator won't work without ferrite rod coil continuity.

Re: BBC TV: The Repair Shop
Won't that depend on whether the aerial coupling coil is part of the bias feed circuit or not?

Re: BBC TV: The Repair Shop
The only antenna "coupling" coil is the one for a car antenna, the base of the mixer/osc is connected to a low impedance tap on the RF coil that's selected, the bias supply is connected to the bottom end of those coils according to a schematic I studied at back at that time (GEC BC505)
