Philips NG5154.
Hi folks,
Can anyone tell me what holds the spindle and record loading arm in place to stop them from being lifted out? Maybe it's a case of I can't see the wood for the trees, or either that there is a part missing. |

Nothing - they do just lift out. Rather strange to have to lift the spindle completely out to be able to remove your stack of LPs but that is the way it is!

Thanks for that John600601, It solved a mystery. It is the first that I have ever had anything to do with this type of record deck.

Re: Philips NG5154.
Hi,
I've got a Garrard RC80M and the spindle lifts out on that too to remove the records. It took me a little while to figure out that that's what's supposed to happen! I hope the cartridge is OK in your Philips, as they're expensive to replace! Cheers, Pete

The sound is very good and loud, I had to change the 50µF + 50µF smoothing cap and lubricate the mech.

Garrard RC80, RC88, RC 98, 88 Mk II, Type A, A70, 70 Mk II and Lab 80 all required the spindle be removed to take off a stack of records. You get used to it after a while but before that, you feel really stupid holding a stack of records with the spindle dangling from the center holes!

Re: Philips NG5154.
On the Philips decks, the idea is that with the automatic spindle and the overarm removed, you put a disc on the turntable, select the size, then press the auto button, and then when the stylus has landed, press the stop button. After the record has played the mech will stop. Very handy for playing LPs completely automatically without the need to handle the arm at all, thus eliminating possible damage to records or styli. Quite an advanced idea at the time.
