This style of set takes me back to when I was a kid, sitting on a plank of wood laid across the arms of a barber's chair.
Mid '60s so a valve portable would have been fairly antiquated even then.

I have one of these, I've had it for years but the output transformer primary is O/C which is why I never did anything with it. But with all the good info about batteries on here, and the thought of listening to the test match (my favourite thing to do with an old radio!) I might dig it out and give it another coat of looking at!
