I wonder where the "Mechanical Turk" fits into the history of Robots?

It pre-dates them...

Asimov had a vision of AI when he created the Robot stories. If you have read his 'Foundation' series, the last one 'Foundation and Earth' sees R Daneel 20,000 years old with abilities to detect thoughts, having rebuilt and improved his Positronic brain many times. However, even though R Daneel is humanoid and capable of independent thought, he still relies on humans for final decisions. This is due to the 'Three laws of Robotics' that Asimov devised. I can't remember them word for word but basically robots cannot harm humans or allow them to come to harm. Self preservation (of the robot) comes last.

If AI ever becomes the norm, I wonder if basic similar laws will be part of the robot programming?

We will only get real robots when machines like Atlas are combined with advanced AI, something that BD has been suspiciously quiet about.

BD is now owned by Hyundai Motors, so a future product could be a car with it's own chauffeur, able to open the doors, load the luggage, and drive.
A bit like the Johnny Cab in Total Recall? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bz3YSGzLciY

I must admit to being very dissappointed over the still delayed general arrival of the Robots. Flat tv screens, star trek type communicators, even body scanners we have but your envisioned ubiquitous household Robot promised in the 50's is still fair bit off (as is the moon base and life on Mars) - and will cost the earth when it arrives if the current robotic lawnmowers are anything to go by.
