Default Newly bought Dansette

Hi
I've just bought this Dansette record player and I'm new to these record players. What year do you think this was made?

It was sold stating that it runs slowly, which probably requires re-greasing, can somebody tell me the model of the turntable & point me to any videos showing how to re-grease the turntable.

The cartridge is currently mono, is there a stereo replacement?

There is a slight hum when nothing is playing, but does not increase when a record is playing and the volume turned up, what's causing this?

What's the best thing to clean the case?

Sorry for all the questions.

Welcome to the forum Simon.

If you look at the top of this section of the forum you will see quite a lot of 'stickies', which provide lots of information helpful advice on regularly recurring requests such as yours. This one for example, has an illustrated 11-page article which provides useful advice to newcomers:

https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...ad.php?t=71164

There are lots more.

You need to state the exact model and if you are competent on electrical work you can find the Data Sheet for you Dansette at the top right of this page 'Vintage Radio & TV Downloads' where you can get an instant download for £1.99.

Mostly, it tends to be cartridges and 'idler wheels' that tend to be problematical. The 'idler wheel' is a rubber wheel that drives the inside of the rim of the turntable. The wheel hardens with age and the rubber ceases to grip the rim so the turntable doesn't rotate as well as it should, or just slips.

Turntable mechanisms may have grease where they shouldn't have, and no grease where they should.

A slight background hum is normal, and when you say 'it doesn't increase in volume', if you gently rub your finger on the stylus at different volume levels I think you may find that the sound level does increase, as it would do with a record playing. If so, that's a good sign that the amplifier is working.

If the background hum was more pronounced, it would mean that the reservoir and smoothing capacitors in the amplifier would mot likely be in need of replacement, so the fact that the hum is slight, is a good sign.

Hope that helps a little.

In answer to your first question, it was probably made between 1963-65.

Welcome, you have come to the right place. Your record player is a Dansette "Bermuda" from 1963. The deck is a BSR UA15. The cartridge fitted is a Mono BSR TC8H high-output type. You will need a stereo cartridge to play stereo LPs - 90% of LPs in most people's collections today with be in Stereo. The problem is you can no longer buy a high-output, stereo-compatible cartridge that your record player needs. You can still buy a clone of the TC8H, but this will be Mono only. You can by a medium-output stereo cartridge, but this will not fully load the very basic amplifier and so the volume output will not be very high. To get to the right output level you will need to add a pre-amplifier. What skills do you have in vintage electronics?

A common fault for slow running on this deck, and other BSR's was the dry bottom bearing on the motor. you will need to take off the bearing by taking out the two bolts that hold the bearing assy. Clean out the bearing carefully and re-oil. If this is not done the motor windings will burn out.

On the subject of cleaning be careful, the Rexine will easily lift if you get it wet and possibly stain. Use just a damp cloth with gentle detergent then wipe over with paper towels and air dry. Only pat the labels/stickers don't rub. From what I can see in the pictures it looks fairly clean and has retained its colour quite well. I have seen a lot worse!

The above is good advice. Do this, but for the more soiled areas, use a medium toothbrush, this can be very effective.

Which would be the best stereo cartridge to put in from these?

https://www.dansette.com/product-pag...tte-cartridges

How would I wire it up as at the moment there are only two wires to the cartridge?

Of these the X3H is the most suitable - I'm very surprised to see one that is still available! But it will need a mounting backet. The existing one will not fit. You will need to bridge the Left hand and Right hand channels to get a true Mono output otherwise you will only hear part of the record's content. This is best done on the tag strip on the underside of the turntable. Bridge the Red to the White and the Green to the Blue.

Do NOT solder directly onto the cartridge pins tho'... (the heat will ruin the cartridge)

The X3H is a mono cartridge, so no need to do any bridging, just use the existing two wires. It is "stereo compatible", though, so it is designed to play stereo records.
