Default Marconiphone Minger

I don't know the correct model number/name. I suspect the horrible black gluey mess covering much of the plastic case is from some repair efforts as it is still wet and the radio is older than me, judging by the Home, Third and Light stations on the tuning scale but the padded plastic panels must have been glued on somehow... There were disintegrated foam rubber particles throughout. The case is broken in a few places. Got it on eBay for £13.20 delivered. They saw me coming.

On the upside it works and there is a button to switch on a bulb under the tuning scale.

That it has a "Lux" button [which will either invoke bandspread-tuning around 208 Metres, or a fixed-tuned feature] suggests it's from the mid-60s.

Hi

I have a couple of Marconiphone 4170's, which are very similar but without the "Lux" button.

The HMV 2170 is also similar, from the era of badge engineering.

I haven't stoked one up in a while but I remember the sound quality is very good. I also remember that they eat batteries, so a stabilised mains PSU is a must !

It's bad but I'll persevere with it. I'm going to try washing-up liquid and hot water.

41xx almost certainly. Maybe it was discontinued because it leaked glue... I did some extensive image searching and found nothing apart a couple of very expensive auction site listings.

The 4122 is MW/LW only and the OP's has VHF; full-band VHF no less.

4160 & 4170 are similar too so mine is probably one of this series, almost certainly 41 something something.

It's a Marconiphone 4126. There is absolutely nothing about this model on the internet.

The third picture in a Google images search for Marconiphone transistor radio, but no help as there isn't any identification. There quite possibly wasn't a full manual issued, just an additional supplement, but for what?

I went to the source of that picture you saw and asked him directly what the model number was. Incidentally he also said his was serial no. 4884. Mine has lost its sticker.

It's very likely that there was an HMV version, which I confidently predict will be a 2126

There would appear to be many very similar sets, with minor tweaks to the wavebands, tone controls etc. So a schematic for one may be a good starting point for another.

I can imagine a BRC board meeting in the mid 1960's where someone piped up "Brand xxx have got a Luxembourg Button, why can't we have one ?" The modifications would have been rushed through in due course.

I had one of these. Nice performer and the chrome makes it feel classy.
Stick with it.

That grille looks undented so it might be worth restoring the whole front by removing the black rexine and adding more thin foam.

Yes, Edward, the front of the grilles are pretty clean as well, remains of various adhesives on the back but that won't be visible when it's reassembled. The foam looks remarkably well preserved perhaps because it is sealed within the rexine (? or is it vinyl?) which is helpfully transparent on the reverse, see picture. The collapsed look of these panels might be down to how it has been stored or maybe the ageing of the plastic but I think the foam is ok, good enough for my standards anyway.

The cleaning has gone well, hot soapy water got most of the black tarry stuff (roofing mastic?) off and rubbing down with meths got a lot of the rest off. I'll give it another go with the meths but the panels and grilles will need to be stuck on somehow so those surfaces needn't be perfect. I'm thinking just enough double sided tape to stop them rattling as they're partly held on by the metal trim. As for restoration I'm just planning to make it clean, robust and functional.

Whilst I don't have the Marconiphone manual, I do have the HMV 2126 service manual. Looking at the manual it appears to be a dead ringer for your model. It has all the same controls and looks identical case wise. PM me if you would like a scan by email for the HMV 2126.

As PM'd to Dave I Googled HMV 2126 and got a record player, after his post I searched more and found this:

https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...d.php?t=153295

... which said it was the same as a HMV 2130 inside, this looks right (and confirms mr1936's suggestions/predictions) and led me to an entertaining video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UtlayUBKzA

... which led me here which clarifies the link between Marconiphone and HMV in my brain:

https://www.radiomuseum.org/dsp_hers...ompany_id=6239

The history of "British Radio Corporation Ltd" is complex and can confuse. It was started in about 1923 and in 1926 was at Elmgrove Road Weybridge, Surrey.

It was taken over by Ferguson which in turn was taken over by Thorn but retaining the Ferguson name for some operations.

The British Radio Corporation Ltd (BRC) name was revived in 1957 as a Thorn subsidiary after the HMV and Marconiphone models became manufactured by Ferguson. This continued until about 1972 when a name change was made to "Thorn Consumer Electronics".

According to the HMV service manuals the 2126 is the portable radio, the 2126A & 2126DA are record players. One should not be ecomical with model numbers and their prefix/suffix, as it can make all the difference, as indeed with this case. BTW I have the service manual for the record player, hence being able to clear up the confusion.

Getting there. Superglued the broken off chassis screw-hole plastic tab on and reinforced it with a blob of epoxy putty, I think under normal handling that should hold. Used double-sided tape to fix the panels, grilles and trim strips in place. Now to clean the pcbs, knobs and buttons and reassemble. Unfortunately there were 4 pcb fixing screws missing and these look to be unobtainable, unless anyone knows different... Diameter 4.5mm pitch 0.65mm length 7mm (not incl head). I can probably bodge something but it seems a shame to ruin the threads.
