Default Tektronics 7623A Storage Oscilloscope

Not quite a Boat Anchor, but this weighs in at 20 Kg.

Seems to work fine.

What is the general consensus of opinion on this Scope?
Good, Bad or indifferent?

Are there any known issues I should know about on these,
apart from not driving the Tube to bright to preserve it's life.

they're good scopes, I have 2 of them. at some point you will get tantalum cap failure in either the main frame or the plugs ins.

it's quite common for electrolytic capacitor failure in the power supply in these scopes ( and 7603 etc) so when one fails I change all of them while the supply module is out. you have to be careful here as some caps have multiple connections to the can and are used to route either the ground or supply rails.

Thumbs up Re: Tektronics 7623A Storage Oscilloscope

Hi All,

I have a 7633 and it works well.
I have had tant caps go short in plug ins, but norhing has given up the ghost in the main chassis yet (this comment will obviously cause something to go bang and short now !!).
Nice series of scopes.

Alan.

Good scopes, even better if you can find a 7B80/85/92 because they will give 20ns sweep without the irritating magnification.

Got one from this group a while back. Nice sharp trace. A pragmatic 7000-series to own. Go easy on the storage!

Just like all the tek 7000 series scopes -- superb in their day & still very useful. Extra plugins can make a standard scope even more useful in applications that a modern DSO just cannot manage. I have a modern Keysight scope on my bench BUT use my 7854 as it is quiceker to start (no software) & never lies about what is it seeing. Plus it has early digital stoage functions as a bonus.

They are a fine scope. I have a 7L12 spectrum analyzer permanently located in mine.

It's Tektronix BTW, not Tectronics.

I have a 7623A with an amazingly well preserved CRT, one recommendation from groups.io/groups/tekscopes is to routinely run the display in variable persistence mode with the persistence set to minimum - makes it less likely to damage the CRT.

The worst culprits among the tantalum caps are the 15V rated caps decoupling the +15V and -15V supply rails, both in the mainframe and the plugins.

Hope you enjoy a really good classic scope.
