The electrolytic capacitors also have + and - marked and need to be connected the same way around as the originals.

Thankyou Mark and Simon. I'll need to buy some capacitors first. Fortunately I already have a multimeter.

I've looked inside the units. These are the capacitors I've found:

Slave - 30 mfd 10v grey

Master - 30 mfd 10v grey
30 mfd 6v grey
5 mfd 6wv black
10 mfd 10v black
30 mfd 10wv black

I haven't come across 'wv' before.

I think 'wv' just means 'working voltage'

The 10uF (mfd, microfarad) one you can get easily. I'd use 4.7uF for the 5uF one and 33uF to replace the 30uF capacitors. These values are not very critical

You can use capacitors rated for a higher voltage than the ones already there, but some people say it's a bad idea to use ones rated at far too high a voltage. Stick with ones rated at 100V or less and you'll be fine.

Much obliged, Tony. I'll see what I can find.
