This is a fascinating read - many thanks for the tip.
I've been trying to get a copy of Keith Thrower's British Radio Valves: the Classic Years for ages - now and again one comes up on Amazon or ebay, but always at a silly price. I suppose that just goes to show what a good book it is! |

Re: An interesting read. 70 Years Of Radio Tubes And Valves.
I bought a copy from the Science Museum shop about 25 years ago. Originally published by The Vestal Press in New York. ISBN 0-911572-27-9. It cost me £12-50 - a bit of a bargain, I thought.
It's worth it just for the chapter references - many from Wireless World, so still valid and available.

Hi!
I'll post a shared link up later! . . .and Keith Thrower's books have been hit by "Valve-foolery" prices as well - I've just looked for one! Chris Williams

Re: An interesting read. 70 Years Of Radio Tubes And Valves.
I've had a hard-copy for about 25 years; it's rather good.
In particular it gives an insight into early US valve-design and production that I've not seen done so well anywhere else. Unfortunately none of the general UK valve-specification sites cover the US valves very well so this book fills in the gaps wonderfully - I now know what valves like a 210 or a 216 are! |

They are getting somewhat 'tight' with the length of time you can borrow a book for, in this case it is 1 hour. |

Re: An interesting read. 70 Years Of Radio Tubes And Valves.
Anyone else fed up with the side issue of downloads being taken off line?? I cannot even find out the full details for that book. Same with Heathkit gear I collect - manuals etc used to be on line until someone who shall remain nameless (but if they ever find his father they can tell him he is both 'a greedy and stupid one') bought the intellectual rights and sent out cease and desist orders to all and sundry. Now fair enough you make a return on recent stuff say in the last 40 years, but we are talking manuals for kits issued in the 1960's. As a side issue the same thing happened to live bluegrass music over in the states where New York law firms sent their members out to live music venues and threatened their owners with legal action if the live bands played any covers of copyright material - no matter how old! I reckon we need a sunset clause for intellectual property copyright that is far lower than the current ones to stop these little horrors.

Re: An interesting read. 70 Years Of Radio Tubes And Valves.
An interesting one as there are vultures everywhere. Personally I find it very interesting that the easiest things to obtain are often de-classified US military and government documents. Their freedom of information (at least I think that is what it is) seems actually more liberal than ours. I do remember some information on equipment freely available of old American NACA (forerunner of NASA) documents but similar research here in the UK is limited available from one organisation (I think possibly University Library).
But not to get political, over the years I have tended to download first and think about it later as a lot of interesting information seems to be noticed and blocked or aquired very quickly. That said the interesting information has little monetary value in most cases. I do find an increasing number of references in which the holder of the document, which may or may not be useful, just shows and abstract then wishes a sum of money for access to the full document. For a 50 or more years old paper I would have to be very convinced that it was what I was looking for, and I suspect that is the case with most researchers, Some companies are sitting on these perhaps making pence on each but building a catalogue to make thousands. |

Thanks from me too, Mike. I've already skimmed the text, and it's a fascinating bit of historical research.
