Mac Hellyer seems the most likely candidate - an article similar in argument and style to PW 100 appears in a 1969 Tape Recorder as "Black List", and, sadly, the dates match.

Hellyer also seems to have written some tape recorder articles under the name 'William Henry' (derived from reversing his forenames).

He also appeared as "Mac" in Tape Recording Magazine, and, no doubt, under other noms de plume elsewhere.
