Fitting in with the 1930's theme, I wonder if any of the Dance Band celebrity's of the time helped to promote radio sets.
I'm keen on this music and have to admit not seeing anything. Perhaps due to contractual reasons they weren't allowed such a side line.

Looking through the 'Murphy Service News' for September 1947 I discovered a picture of Eve Taylor, the Murphy 'cover girl'. John.

Can you believe this is the cover of a BRIMAR radio valve wall chart from 1952?

Of course! These valve data books were the home of the service dept not for display in the showroom. John.

If they did any work for the BBC they were probably not allowed to by their contract as you state. There were a few BBC personalities who fell foul of that and had to leave. One if I remember correctly was Percy Thrower, the gardening expert, Gardeners World, I think it was BBC’s loss though.

It's a fairly recent trend for "Celebrities" to descend into the world of advertising.

Christopher Stone was the first BBC 'disc jockey' and was well known for his record programmes from the start of 2LO in 1922.

He endorsed BUSH RADIO from it's beginning in the early 30's.

This part advert is from 1954. J.

Arthur Askey was connected with television from the Baird days and is seen here advertising the Ultra VT814/5 in 1955.

This is a very interesting thread [started by Cobalt"blue"]. No 5* is still my favourite but the photograph of a portable set being admired on a Canal Barge [post 11*] is very striking! Overall and including No 5 ["Turn it up" p17*] many of the 30's illustrations are in the style captured so well on the covers of the Radiophile Magazine by Mrs Jo Miller! The book at P23* [Brimar] is a good example-1950's but in the same tradition!

Not really, celebrities have been in ads for donkey's years, it's just got much more prevalent now. Celebrities are unashamedly more greedy these days I reckon. Kinda, make hay while the sun shines cos you ain't gonna be a celebrity for much longer - maybe..

I suppose its always been true that sex sells.

I would be surprise if the picture in post 5 was actually selling radios.

It would be considered quite tame today but pretty racey in the 1920's

Its a nicely composed and very suggestive.

If that's a genuine period picture the model would be about 110 now.

Unfortunately I am overseas at the moment because I have some pictures I want to share.

If you go to my web site you will see the pictures that made me start this thread Ladies with Cossor Cathode ray tubes.

Employees? Professional models?

Cheers

Well, it certainly looks like AA in 'playmates' mode but were Ultra being a bit sneeky in using a cartoon character of a man who merely looks like AA? In which case he wouldn't have received a penny. Maybe he did get paid, but if that's the case then surely Ultra would have mentioned his name too to get maximum bang for their buck? I don't think AA got paid for that though I'll stand corrected. Nice ad though.

Not a recent trend at all; It seems that in the 1940s Arthur Askey on the BBC did fake ads for a stain-removal product called "Askitoff", with the tagline "Askitoff will take it off".

Someone clever then spotted the opportunity and launched a product called 'Askitoff' to the market. At which point the Beeb - rather than seeking a business-agreement with the smart opportunist to profit-share - instantly banned Askey from further mention of the name.

In the early to mid 50's Eamonn Andrews also had a very long advertising association with GEC television. J.

How bizarre, her thighs are bigger than her waist!

Well it's an idealised male advertising fantasy from 66 years ago representing the sensibilities of the time!. I don't think it was intended to be accurate or at all realistic in the circumstances! They say that thighs isn't everything but maybe it is on this occasion

Here is an advert from 1949 featuring the late US actress Hope Lange wearing a radio hat.

Much more tasteful but shades of "My Favourite Martian" for those familiar with the TV program
