Default (Fairly) Old (1980s?) Telephone. Tribune.

Good Afternoon,

Just thought I would share some photos of an oldish BT Telephone I have come across in a clear out.

I did use it for a little while some time ago and in all fairness, it has a good easy to hear ring on it.

Case: UK R.D. No. 1023162
Handset: UK R.D. No. 1023163

TRIBUNE
Manufactured in the UK for British Telecom

One of the better "BT" designs of the time.

I've never seen an official circuit diagram for the Tribune, so I reverse-engineered mine. I've attached the diagrams I produced which cover the 2 common versions. They differ in the ringer, one has an electronic tone ringer, the other an electromechanical bell.

Unusual in that it was available with both Bell and Tone Caller versions, and also did not have "modular" cords, which almost every other phone did by this time.

I'd better dig mine out and check which version it is.

I like these too, the red looking particularly smart. Nice that yours is the DTMF version too; the early ones were LD only.

I can remember them being sold and rented out from the BT shop in Elys department store in Wimbledon just after my parents moved there, so presuambly 1986-ish.

They seemed to be almost exclusively used in domestic environments, unlike the Statesman and Viscount which made it into offices, airports and educational establishments etc. in huge quantities. Maybe that's because they couldn't be wall mounted?

Hi, the version of the Tribune with built in amplifier and neon lamp to indicate an incoming call seemed rather popular with the elderly folk in this area. I seem to recall that particular model was tone caller only.

I had one of these. I could never work out what sort of microphone was fitted in the handset but it was about the diameter of a 2p piece and about 3/4" deep. Too big for a simple electret and not quite big enough for a rocking armature dynamic insert. Moving coil, perhaps ? I don't know.

The Lamp and Amplifier version with the extra earpiece is a bell model. When I bought in the 80s the amplified versions were only available with a bell ringer.

Additional "watch" receiver. Very continental!
