Default Dial-blank 706 telephone conversion

Hello. I've just bought this old 706 and I plan to convert it with a new line cord, resistor and so on. Before the kit arrives, is there anything obvious to an expert (but not me) that might need attention? Obviously, I'll give the inside a sweep and a vacuum and give the handset and case a good wash too. Incidentally, it's one of those upside-down phones for wall mounting.

High this could be a 706CB for a originally for a Central Battery Manual Exchange. N Diagram N806 refers to it on the notes on page four. If you check how the straps are connected this will confirm if it is or if it has been set up as an incoming calls only extension on an Automatic Exchange.

Thanks, Trevor, I'll have a look. It's a Reliance model from no earlier than 1964 (going by the earphone element) with the designation 'TEL17K/ATS' on the base.

The diagrams suggest this is likely to be a CB telephone although I think one strap might have been in a different place. I'm just waiting for the conversion kit to arrive and then we'll see what happens.

On a CB telephone with no dial you will need to put a strap or two to replace the missing dial contacts.

I believe that's done in Photo 2 (in the first post). The 3 wires stuck into holes in the plastic base are the ones that go to the normally-open 'off normal' contacts so are left unconnected in the CB version. The 2 wires under the screw (and thus shorted together) are the pair that go to the normally-closed impulse contacts.

See https://britishtelephones.com/gec/tel17k.htm which links you to conversion details for the GPO's Tele 706.

Newly-restored and functional. Just need to decide which wall to hang it on.

The bell is still connected in this telephone but I would like to disconnect it. In the absence of a bell on/off switch, is there a recommended way to disable the bell, be it just disconnecting its wires and parking them on spare terminals or shorting the two terminals ?

Many thanks.

If you've converted it to the BT plug wiring system, then disabling the bell is simply a matter of disconnecting it. Removing the added 3k3 resistor will do that. So will moving one of the bell wires to a spare terminal.
