Re: Thorn HMV 2614
Yes thank you!
Hussains Central. I was doing my C&G 224 then. I bunged out rental G8 for a local Arthur Daley at the time. I could retube and reconverge in record time. Very dodgy customers that needed to be on meters on the back. I shall put up pictures of my progress getting this back in order. |

Re: Thorn HMV 2614
The 2614 is currently belting out Radio 4. I now have the correct circuits as recommended by Fernseh. Now for that fiendish frame fault.

Re: Thorn HMV 2614
Indeed Dazzle. The original owner not into classical I think!
Probably tarnished but I am nervous with these tuners as so sensitive to prodding around. Lecher lines. It is my experience to leave them alone unless you really have to open them up. I have good Channel 1 from the Aurora. |

Re: Thorn HMV 2614
The Lechers are in the UHF. The radio is using the VHF passed through to 625 side of the set.

Re: Thorn HMV 2614
Probably just needs a tweak on the oscillator core for the 'Third Programme' but best left well alone if your not confident. Looks an attractive receiver and very useable. The 850 gives a very good 405 line picture. John.

Re: Thorn HMV 2614
To the experienced.
Do the turret wafers come out easily? This radio thing is not really a priority just now as I sort frame scan but I did pop turret cover off as I suspect L206 on the third wafer. I don't think its the oscillator tweak more like the coil o/c or dry. |

Re: Thorn HMV 2614
They should do, but it will probably be much easier if you remove the VHF tuner and the metal bracket it is mounted on, from the cabinet first (unless you can adequately access the biscuits with the tuner in situ). Looking at your photo in an earlier post, the large metal tuners plate/panel is secured to the cabinet by some long 2BA brass nuts. You'll also have to take off the front knobs.
Then, you will see that each "biscuit" is held in place by a "springy" piece of metal, which can be eased out slightly to allow that end of the biscuit to be gently prised up and away from the metal turret plate that all biscuits are held in place by. This end of each biscuit has a protrusion on it that sits in a groove cut into the metal turret plate. The other end of the biscuit is the opposite shape and fits into holes in the turret plate at that end. |

Re: Thorn HMV 2614
Thank you for that.
It is a job to do once I sort out scans on this lovely TV. No results as yet from UHF side of things. |

The UHF tuner may well just need a pair of new valves (PC88 + PC86), but I have also had dry joints internally (but great care is needed when working inside the tuner, to avoid even slightly disturbing the component or component lead positions, as this can have a major effect on tuner alignment). Another possible source of no UHF signals is a warped UHF biscuit (or dirty/weak contacts) in the VHF tuner. The UHF tuner biscuit is much longer. Poor frame linearity is probably due to leaky paper dielectric capacitors. From your photo, these are the blue "Dubilier" and green "TCC" types on the lower printed circuit board. However, it's almost certain that every paper dielectric capacitor in the set will have to be replaced in order to get the best results, but some are in more critical circuit positions than others. There are also a couple on the extreme right hand side of the chassis, by the linear (slider type) 405-625 system switch - under a thick card cover (that hinges open). These are the "S correction" capacitors - one for each line standard. These may be black (or possibly brown) "Hunts" "moldseal" types. These can adversely affect width and/or horizontal linearity. Much appreciated Dazzle.
Thats my next move. Capacitors. I'll put pictures up as I progress. |

Re: Thorn HMV 2614
Here's a photo of a new, unused 850FM IF panel that I once owned (for many years), but never actually used.
Beware of the vertically mounted Dubilier "Bluecon" paper capacitors (and some of the grey Dubilier ones too!). There's also a black "Hunts" Moldseal lurking in the bottom left hand corner area. |

Re: Thorn HMV 2614
I also had to fashion a knob.
The UHF tuner slider had lost its brass insert. So I cut a circle, glued it on then spun it with sandpaper to finish it. A bit crude but it will do. |
