Re: DC-DC converter for car radio

There was no discernible difference in reception between using this unit (with the earth terminal suitably grounded) and a 5-volt linear supply. |

Re: DC-DC converter for car radio
Just a point, the aerial needs to be isolated?

Re: DC-DC converter for car radio
I assumed not - that is the point of the module. The set is fitted into a wooden dashboard and the only actual connection is via the aerial screen.

Re: DC-DC converter for car radio
Further to my previous post #21, I was referring to the DC-DC power supply case / EMI filter earth terminal which is separate from the fully isolated output.
There should be no need to isolate the aerial but it may be necessary to also ground the radio case to the car metalwork. |

Re: DC-DC converter for car radio
I wondered about grounding the case to avoid interference. Presumably that is isolated?

Re: DC-DC converter for car radio
The car radio I installed many years ago had a non-isolated case which included a heavy-duty earth terminal for connection to the car metalwork.
Given the radio supply is fully floating, it is probably more important to earth the radio from an RF interference viewpoint rather than rely on the aerial coax screen. Last edited by DAC10 Collector; 27th Mar 2023 at 3:33 pm. Reason: typo |

Re: DC-DC converter for car radio
Ok. thanks. The car belongs to a friend who had just gone on holiday. I will tell him about the possible solution when he returns.
Many thanks

Re: DC-DC converter for car radio
The radio wont care which pole of the dc-dc converter supply is earthed, which of course is the idea. Likewise the aerial earth, which presumably is connected to the radio chassis, can also be connected to the vehicle (+ve) earthed chassis along with the radio body itself. The only slight issue might be if switching noise gets into the isolated part, but experimentation with a small coupling cap to chassis should mitigate that.

Re: DC-DC converter for car radio
12v to 24v boost converters for hgv are available cheaply, one powered pos to ground, neg to -12v will give +24 wrt -ve, so 12v positive to feed a grounded neg-earth radio with no live chassis to worry about.

Re: DC-DC converter for car radio
I did see some converters but they all seemed to be 24>12v. I can see how one working the other way would work if it was isolated

Re: DC-DC converter for car radio
I've used Meanwell p.s.u.s in a number of different pieces of equipment, without any problems, I bough a batch to replace failing UK made units and found better noise peformance as a bonus. If you're putting it in a box, I would suggest adding further input protection to guard against spikes from "field dump". Can't say more obviously.
