Default HMV advertising 1938

I thought this interesting - a flagging to the trade of an ad that was apparently destined to be sent to 15,000,000 homes. The reach of the big corporation, eh?

I wonder how successful it was. Would the suggestions be too subtle or did it work I wonder.

Here's an HMV commercial from 1937 with a rather muscular delivery. Sums up the appeal rather well I think...

Shame it was a somewhat scratchy lo-fi recording!

Rather detracted from the claims being made

Well maybe Herald but there could have been some subsequent deterioration I suppose. Actually I thought it was pretty impressive, relatively loud and clear but with a vintage flavour. Much better than I would have thought from your description. In the manner of ["This is the BBC from The North"] Mark Radcliffe or John Peel I'm already thinking of extracts to preface certain music tracks It certainly goes ok with the well worn printed advertising skodajag found. Thanks for posting both items guys.

I could almost be listening to Radio Normandie!

Leonard Plugge’s stations, and Radio Luxembourg, would have been the only stations on which that would have been heard.

An authoritative yet ‘neutral’ voice in some contrast the cut glass RP that would have emanated from the BBC of the time.
