It would be possible to retrofit a small stereo amp board connected to the scart socket for auxiliary inputs. Plenty of these available on ebay and the like, or use a board from some powered PC speakers.

It seems that Sony were alone in producing a widescreen portable, it must of cost a fair bit to produce the CRT, I wonder if it was ever produced in monitor form?

After a little bit of research, it turns out there was a stereo version! It’s model number is KV-16WS1D, and it also had an S-video socket on the front too. I wonder if any exist here?

Well what do you know! I should've known! Looks like that's the German version (D - Deutsche); so just like its bigger brother, there is also a UK version: KV-16WS1U.

I'm surprised the service manual does not cover both 16 and 20 inch. I guess there must've been enough differences between them to have their own respective service documentation. Perhaps slightly different revisions of the BE-5 chassis.

I just dug out my Sony, the first thing I noticed was the Nicam badge on the front, and yes, it does have an S-video input and L&R audio & composite input beneath the front flap.
So it is a stereo model after all
