Default Bush VCR803XSL OVD-6/B Low Audio

Recently I was given two large boxes of VHS tapes. The only VCR I have is a Bush model from about 1999. I gave the tape transport a good clean as it has never been cleaned before.

Tapes playback fine over scart. The problem is that the audio is very quiet, I needed to turn my TV up past 50 to listen comfortably.

Does anybody have any service information for this model? Or any troubleshooting tips? The part of the mainboard that I think deals with audio is covered with lots of little electrolytic capacitors.

I know that it will be a generic VCR with a Bush logo slapped on it. The mainboard does not have the name of the manufacturer on it, just 'VM9164A'.

Is this on linear sound or on hifi sound or both?

It seems this is an Orion made model, you can identify it from the style of the model label, with a bit of luck.

I think it is just linear audio. The HiFi parts of the mainboard are not populated.

Here are some photographs.

Interestingly enough, the mainboard has a section labeled ST(stereo?)/NICAM but there isn't any component in there. So I'm guessing it's a mono model. Try a recording on this machine and check how it sounds on another machine.

I agree with Maarten about this being orion the serial No type gives it away
Just a thought is there any other scart leads connected in any way ie by a connecting block. I once had a matsui with this problem due to the dvd player loading the audio out on the scrat lead. Later today I will have a look in my shed to see if I have got circuit Digram

Could it be something simple like a dirty audio head ?

Also worth checking to see what the audio is like over RF (with the SCART connected and disconnected). If the same, try cleaning as mentioned, and/ or try reseating the flat ribbon cable to the Audio/ Control head.

Thanks 1955APREN for the offer of a service manual, I hope you can find one.

I have cleaned the audio head and it looks fine. I will try different ways of connecting the VCR up to my TV and report back with the results. Also, I will make sure everything is seated correctly.

I have just tried the VCR with another TV and a different scart cable. No change in symptom.

Via RF the audio is nice and loud! As it should be and in mono. Was RF mono only? Or is that what NICAM was?

The problem must be between the audio amp and the scart audio out.

I'm at the point were a circuit diagram is necessary. I could not see if any leaking or bulged capacitors.

So that means that the audio circuit must be OK. Otherwise you must have the same problem with modulator. Check for bad connections

Hi
I have looked at the matsui vp 9405 manual I scanned the block dig& the audio circuit but I think that you have a differt panel then this one the No on this one is VM6119a . The audio amp is a la7288 input pin 4 out on pin2, But your last posting seems to indicate that this is ok if the sound on RF is ok.
this would seem to indicate the the fault is near to the scrat socket.
Hope this might help
Derrick

Forgive me for asking the obvious. What's the audio like on its own recordings?

If its ok it may just be that the audio control head is out of alignment.
