SONY VHS error codes
Recently picked up a late 1990s Sony SLV-SE70 (Also have one as SX70, French version).
All seemed fine but wouldn't reach the end of the tape in rewind, stopping about ten mins from tape start and showing error code 4 11 05 in the display. This thread gives an idea of some codes, but for convenience it may be handy if someone can post more extensive info. Here's what I found in the link above: "The centre part tells which mode the machine was in when the fault occured (the "minutes" part). It is the last part of the code that is important (the "seconds" part)." The code is as follows 00 No fault 01 Take up reel not rotating 02 Supply reel not rotating 03 No drum rotation 04 Clockwise rotation of capstan motor incorrect 05 Anticlockwise rotation of capstan motor incorrect 06 Cassette loading incorrect 07 Cassette loading incorrect So it would seem the fault is definitely in rewinding. Today I had the deck out and gave it a clean and general service, including a strip and clean of the mode switch to eliminate that as a possibiity. The drive belt looked fine but I suspect I should change it and try again. Meanwhile, any suggestions welcome.

Re: SONY VHS error codes
Hi Ben
According to the service manual the fault is located on the supply reel during rewind function. Are you sure that the other functions are OK? Remove the supply reel and check the sensors and the reel surface. |

Re: SONY VHS error codes
Just an update on this. I have had this unit in use for some time now and the fault seems to have disappeared.
I rewound a few fully spooled tapes and I think that helped, since it was working at full speed. I know it had been sitting idle for a few years, so I suspect things just loosened up after a few 'blasts' at high winding speed. Will keep under observation.
